Alex Maas of The Black Angels @ Psych Fest 2012 (4/27/2012)

Austin Psych Fest continues today, Saturday, 4/28, at Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom where it started yesterday. Check the full schedule HERE.
I arrived on Friday in time to catch Lockett Pundt of Deerhunter's project Lotus Plaza, missed Psychic Ills, but then caught everyone else until the end which meant I saw Lotus Plaza tour-mates (featuring Steve Shelly from Sonic Youth on Drums) Disappears, locals Sleep Over and Ringo Deathstarr and fest co-founders The Black Angels, as well as Dead Meadow, Sun Araw and Peaking Lights. Pictures from all of that, below...
Black Lips at Coachella (more by David Andrako)

Austin Psych Fest is finally here and like any festival with a large number of bands, it's not without its casualties:
Unfortunately the Intelligence had to cancel their tour, and will no longer be playing the festival. They will have a new album out in 2012, look out for it!While those cancellations are a bummer, the festival has since added names like Thee Oh Sees, Meat Puppets, and many more to their venerable roster. Check out the full schedule below, and order your tickets or weekend passes.Due to a situation out of the band and festival's control, ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail of The Dead will no longer be able to perform their set at Austin Psych Fest. Our best wishes to the Trail of The Dead and hopefully we'll have them back for 2013, stay tuned...
Austin Psych Fest officially kicks off on Friday (4/27) but had its first event, a screening, on Monday (4/23) and meanwhile has been hosting some pre-parties which continue tonight (4/26) with Indian Jewelry, Christian Bland and The Revelators, The Wolf, Slow Motion Rider, Cerise, Chief Nowhere, and Rishi at Red 7. Entry is free with your ASF week pass or $15 at the door.
Full schedule of Austin Psych Fest events is below.

Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit @ Emo's East on 4/13/2012

After playing many shows during SXSW last month, Delta Spirit returned to Austin to play a full Emo's East on Friday night. Much like at their recent sold out show at NYC's Webster Hall, over 1500 attended (including Matt Vasquez's Mom) at what was likely one of DS' largest headlining show to date. Here are some pics.
WATERS opened for Delta Spirit (though unfortunately I missed them while shooting School of Seven Bells and Exitmusic at Mohawk earlier the same night).

Devin The Dude on tour, playing tonight at Beauty Ballroom (where Pharcyde play Saturday) -- WIN TIX
Devin the Dude @ Mohawk in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)

In this week's Hip-Hop news, Devin the Dude is set to perform at Beauty Ballroom tonight (4/12), with classic LA crew The Pharcyde following him at the same venue this Saturday ( while Tyga perfoms next door at Emo's East (4/14)). Unlike the now sold-out Tyga show, tickets are still available to both Beauty Ballroom shows, AND we have a pair of tickets for each BB concert you can win. Details below.
For the Dude, the Austin show is one date of a month+ long tour that ends back in Texas. On May 11th he plays Dallas one day before a hometown show in Houston (where the Pharcyde play this Sunday). All tour dates with contest details, below...
Wye Oak (more by Chris La Putt)
![]()

This garage rock show, previously announced without the full lineup, is the only show that the still-reunited Gories and garage punk powerhouse The Spits are playing during SXSW, though it's not part of SXSW so badges won't get you in, though RSVPing will.
LA Record is a co-presenter of this show, and OC Weekly asked LA Record head honcho Chris Ziegler why:
OC Weekly: Why did you partner with In The Red Records? It should definitely be a good one.Chris Ziegler: In The Red is one of my favorite labels and I have dedicated a considerable part of my record-collecting life to working backwards to find and secure all the amazing records they put out when I was a little kid in Arizona and didn't know where records came from. Larry Hardy--who runs In The Red--has some kind of innate animal sense for rock & roll, and like six of my favorite 20 "contemporary" records are on In The Red: Wounded Lion, Andre Williams, Reigning Sound, Spits, Davila 666, Dirtbombs, Strange Boys, Clone Defects and Human Eye, Deadly Snakes ... Larry Hardy can pretty much fire when ready as far as I'm concerned.
The Spits are currently on tour with TV Ghost. Check out pictures from the show they played at Cake Shop in NYC the other night.
Thee Oh Sees are also playing a bunch of other shows including the Carson Daly official showcase.
Spike (right) on stage with D.R.I. at Emo's (more by Tim Griffin)

As reported on BrooklynVegan, Spike Cassidy of D.R.I. is recovering from surgery and some complications that arose from it. No word on how it will affect their appearance at Emo's East on March 7th, but we'll hope that it doesnt. Tickets are still available.
Overkill don't play the same show with D.R.I. like they do in NYC, but Overkill will hit Emo's East soon as well, on May 5th with Belphegor, Aborted, Blackguard, and Diamond Plate. Tickets are on sale.
In other 80s metal-at-Emo's news, look for Deicide to play the venue on March 27th with Jungle Rot, Abigail Williams, Lecherous Nocturne, and Flesh Hoarder. Tickets are on sale. So far no word from Vegas regarding the odds that Glen Benton will cancel his appearance with the band, but I am guessing it's pretty close to even.
Megadeth and Motorhead play ACL Live on March 3rd.

As just announced over at BrooklynVegan, Spiritualized will head out on a tour in support of a NEW album this year. That tour hits Emo's East on May 16th, one day after visiting Dallas's Granada Theatre. Austin tickets go on sale Friday, 2/3, at 10am!
Delta Spirit @ Emo's Outside (more by Tim Griffin)

Delta Spirit, who played one of the last shows at Emo's Outside last year, will play one of the first (relatively speaking) at the new Emo's East on 4/13 as part of a tour with WATERS that also begins right here in Austin at SXSW...
"There's a reason that the third album by Delta Spirit is self-titled: "Because this album is what we think Delta Spirit is," says lead vocalist Matt Vasquez. Delta Spirit will be released by Rounder Records on March 13th, the Tuesday of SXSW Week. "We found the sound that we've been looking for, that we've been growing into, and as soon as we hit on it, we ran with it," says Vasquez. The band realized their vision in sound with producer Chris Coady, who has worked with artists like TV on the Radio, the Yeah Yeahs, Smith Westerns and Beach House.Stay tuned for their full list of 2012 SXSW shows, but so far we know (via ShowlistAustin) that one of them will be a free in-store at Waterloo on 3/13.Delta Spirit recorded at Dreamland in Woodstock, NY, in a converted 1896 church. They experimented both sonically and structurally with their new material, writing songs with no choruses and generally throwing off simple verse-chorus-bridge conventions. With an album in hand that they feel is true to what Delta Spirit is all about, the band will follow their SXSW appearance with a 30-date national tour. They're known for bringing a raucous energy and exuberance to every performance." [SXSW]
Meanwhile, tickets for the post-SXSW Emo's East show are on sale.

We knew the dates (April 27th - 29th), but now The Reverberation Appreciation Society and The Black Angels have released the initial lineup poster for the 5th annual Austin Psych Fest and it looks aswesome as usual. As mentioned on BrooklynVegan, this year's fest will take place at Austin's two newest big venues, Emo's East and Beauty Ballroom right next door.
Emo's East is now the only Emo's since their Red River location closed on 12/30, and the Beauty Ballroom is (hopefully) having their rescheduled Grand Opening on January 27th (with Theophilus London and Treasure Fingers) and continuing on January 28th.
APF will feature around 60 bands over the three day, two venue event. About 40 are included in the poster above (and listed below), with another 20 or so to be announced in March. Announced bands include the Black Angels (who played Emo's East on New Year's Eve), the Black Lips, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow, Olivia Tremor Control, Wooden Shijps, and many more. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday (January 21st) at 12pm CST at austinpsychfest.com.

Deer Tick, who opened the BrooklynVegan official SXSW showcase at Club DeVille in 2008 and then headlined the BrooklynVegan official SXSW showcase at Club DeVille in 2009, and then played an unofficial BV party at Barbarella during SXSW 2011, was back in Austin in October (OcTICKber?) for their Divine Providence record release show. The album has since made it to #24 on SPIN's top 50 albums list for 2011. They'll be touring in Europe in a few months after ending 2011 in NYC at Brooklyn Bowl on New Year's Eve with Virgin Forest who also played with the band at Emo's.

David Yow of Scratch Acid on 12/10

"Welcome to the 2011 edition of the Scratch Acid reenactment."Though this would have probably been an amazing show to help close down the old Emo's, Scratch Acid instead helped put the new Emo's East on the map on Saturday night (which was a good thing for the hundreds of people there that would have never fit in the small Emo's Inside). When Dinosaurs Roamed the Earth opened the show. Here are some pictures. They continue with the setlist below...~ David Yow

The press release says it all (well, most of it):
BEAUTY BAR'S HEADING EASTGrupo Fantasma tickets are on sale.
The Beauty Ballroom opens New Years Eve with Grupo FantasmaAfter 5 years at its current location on 7th St and Red River, The Beauty Bar brand is expanding to a second location, a 700-capacity venue located at 2015 Riverside, on the SE corner of Royal Crest and Riverside.
Beauty Bar founder Paul Devitt and Frank Hendrix from Emo's are joining forces to bring this exciting new venue to Austin. "Frank approached me this summer about his plans to lease a boarded up nightclub near the new Emo's. A month later he asked me if I'd be interested in partnering up" said Devitt. "We became friends when I opened on 7th Street and Frank has always liked the brand."
The Beauty Ballroom will feature state of the art light and sound, a 500-cap dance floor and 200-cap balcony. This second, new Beauty Bar location promises to be one of Austin's premier live music venues with a focus on booking more national and international touring acts while still offering the lounge feel and Beauty Bar aesthetic that patrons around the country have fallen in love with.
"We are really excited about the new venue on Riverside. From the layout of the building to the live production specs to the signature paint job and decor, we are really putting a lot of thought into this venture and we hope to bring Austin something a little different from the standard music venue experience." - Beauty Bar partner Bart Butler.
December 31, 2011, The Beauty Ballroom makes its grand debut with a special New Years Eve performance from longtime Beauty Bar compatriots and Grammy Award winning artists Grupo Fantasma, along with Maneja Beto and DJ Chorizo Funk. In addition, the show will be filmed and recorded for inclusion in the bands upcoming live CD/DVD release. For more information visit http://thebeautybar.com/austin
What the press release doesn't mention is that Beauty Bar's current location on Red River is, if the rumors are to be believed, closing after SXSW this year. Emo's closes its Red River location even sooner. Emo's Inside will host its last show on 12/30 of this year.
Emo's East, or "the new Emo's" as they call it above, is having a New Year's Eve party with The Black Angels, Wooden Shjips and Ume. Tickets are on sale.
