Redspencer-A

Australian band Redspencer ready their jazzy, harmony-filled debut LP (listen to two songs)

Redspencer-A

Melbourne’s Redspencer, led by brothers Dave and Aiden McMillian, make jazzy guitar pop that’s a bit out of step with most of the city’s indie rock groups getting attention these days. (They sound more like Trashcan Sinatras than any band featuring Mikey Young.) Having released an EP and a few songs on compilations, Redspencer are set to release their debut album, Perks, on November 18 via Deaf Ambitions.

We’ve got the premiere of “Rainbows” off the LP, a single about consumerism set to an effervescent melody and gorgeous harmonies right out of an America album. Though David tells us that, musically, the song has another inspiration. “It might not be noticeable, but this song was influenced by Rodriguez. Every now and then I re-visit ‘Coming from Reality’. He was a super aware guy with kind of humble perspective and had a subtle way of describing situations. I learned the song ‘Think of You’ and stole a few of those chords for ‘Rainbows’.” You can listen to that, and another song off the LP, below.
