Awkwafina is getting her own Comedy Central show

Awkwafina, who first started breaking out as a rapper but then got legitimately famous as an actress (thanks to roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, as well as recently hosting SNL) is now getting her own Comedy Central series. It’s simply called Awkwafina, and Vanity Fair reports that it was ordered for a 10-episode season. The article also says the show “was inspired by Awkwafina’s own upbringing in Queens [and] will follow an ambitious Queens-dwelling twentysomething who lives with her father and grandmother.”

Awkwafina’s father will be played by B.D. Wong (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Mr. Robot) and her grandmother will be played by Lori Tan Chinn (Orange is the New Black). Bowen Yang, who recently joined the SNL staff, will play Awkwafina’s “more successful cousin.” Awkwafina wrote the first episode with Karey Dornetto (SMILF, Portlandia) and Teresa Hsiao (Family Guy, American Dad), and Lucia Aniello (Broad City) is directing.

Awkwafina said: “I’ve been watching Comedy Central since I was old enough to hold a remote, and so many of their shows have defined who I am today. I am so honored to be given their platform to tell the story of an Asian-American girl against the backdrop of the city [in which] I was raised.”
