Balance & Composure share “Spinning,” playing intimate NYC show before tour

Balance & Composure
B&C at Saint Vitus in January (more by Mimi Hong)

Everything about Balance & Composure’s set felt like a test run for something bigger coming soon. The band opened with two new songs, both of which were less aggro takes on their mix of shoegaze and emo, and they included a third premiere near the end of the set. The older songs were equally tentative. Singer Jon Simmons toyed around with crowd participating, mostly through synchronized vaping, and joked about the band’s nervousness about playing after six months of inactivity. They cut their set even shorter than their allotted half-hour, leaving a small pack of fans chanting for an encore. This brevity, along with the inclusion of electronic drums on one of their unreleased songs, left me far more intrigued than if the band had sprawled out on one of the festival’s larger stages. [Ian Cory]

The above quote is from our review of this past weekend’s Riot Fest Chicago, where Balance & Composure previewed some of their upcoming album, Light We Made, which is a decidedly new approach for the band. As mentioned, they’re touring in support of it with Foxing and Mercury Girls, including a NYC show on November 17 at Warsaw.

Earlier than that, B&C will play a MUCH smaller NYC show on October 8 at Rough Trade. It’s a 2 PM in-store (1:30 PM doors), and you have to purchase their new album from Rough Trade starting 9/30 to get in. More info here.

Light We Made is out the day before the Rough Trade show on their new label home, Vagrant. B&C just premiered “Spinning” from the new album. Listen, with the list of updated tour dates, below.
