Baroness at Saint Vitus – 12/20/15
Baroness

Baroness returned last week with their great new album Purple, and wrapped up a tour in support of it with two NYC shows on Sunday (12/20). The first was an afternoon in-store at Rough Trade, which I caught. It was a short set, just five songs in about a half hour, and had them opening with “March to the Sea” off Yellow & Green, playing three of the new album, and ending with the instrumental “Green Theme.” John Baizley said they were ending with an instrumental because his voice was hurting from tour. You could tell it was pretty shot, but the band otherwise sounded fantastic and just watching the immense talent all four of them have as musicians is a thing to experience on its own. The crowd was clearly loving them too, and the band looked genuinely grateful to finally be playing new songs for people. At night they played Saint Vitus with Earthling, and we have pictures and a full-set video of that show in this post (including a pic of the setlist).

In other news, James Hetfield of Baroness’ past tourmates Metallica named Purple his favorite album of 2015. (It was my third favorite metal album.) It’s on a list that he posted to Metallica’s fan club called “Top 10 Thingz of 2015” and it’s the only one that’s an album. Other thingz include meeting Robert Plant, jamming with Jerry Cantrell, Pepper Keenan being back in Corrosion of Conformity and, uh, Justin Bieber wearing a Metallica shirt. Obviously.
