Big Thief tell us about their Top 10 Breakfasts of 2016, expand tour
Brooklyn’s Big Thief had a good year, releasing one of the most acclaimed debut albums of 2016 with Masterpiece, which has shown up on more than a few year-end lists. (Big Thief made our list of 15 Best New(ish) Rock Bands of 2016.) The band were road warriors this year and that will continue into 2017, including their biggest headlining NYC show to date, Bowery Ballroom on January 7 with Sam Evian and Twain (tickets). They’ve added tons more dates since we last posted and their updated tour schedule is below.
Speaking of lists, we’ve been asking some of our favorite artists to tell us about the Top 10s of 2016. When we asked Big Thief, they replied, “We believe that there are plenty of top album/song lists out there,” and gave us a different topic. Guitarist Buck Meek explains: “On tour, breakfast is the one of the only senses of home we can rely on daily in a whirlwind of driving, soundchecking, performing, and sleeping in strange motels. After circling the USA 4.5 times, here are our ten favorite breakfasts of the year.” If you’re in a band, this list may be of some help. Check it out, complete with Buck’s commentary, below.
:Big Thief’s Top 10 Breakfasts of 2016:
10. Red Robin Diner – Johnson City, New York:
This place is a living Norman Rockwell painting, with sunlight pouring through the steam of $3, 2 eggs, homefries, toast, and coffee breakfast specials.
9. Al’s Breakfast – Minneapolis, Minnesota
The narrowest restaurant in the city of Minneapolis. Literally a roof built on top of an alleyway between two buildings in 1937, originally as a sheet metal shed for hardware store. Fourteen stools, juxtaposing wabi-sabi mugs and plates, obligatory coffee and perfect blueberry pancakes.
8. Buddy’s Diner – Somerville, Massachusetts: Just look at this place.
7. Aunties and Uncles – Toronto, Ontario
Two story fairy tale with every pastel color on earth and amazing apple cinnamon pancakes.
Our friend Jack started this amazing coffee shop, with a real community feeling. Good coffee, beer, and an all natural, serious taco truck outside in the yard. You could eat breakfast three times a day here and never get tired of it.
6b. Tacos El Primo/Once Over Coffee – Austin, TX
Tied with Veracruz is Tacos El Primo, just up the street. These tacos are completely transcendent, out-of-body, and you can bring them into Once Over, which makes good coffee and has a lovely back porch.
5. Shamrock Tacos – Wimberley, Texas
The Diamond Shamrock gas station in my home town has a killer breakfast taco restaurant in the back, with smoked brisket and egg tacos, fresh pico de gallo, and Topo Chico.
4. Phoenicia Diner – Phoenicia, New York
This old-school diner in the Catskill mountains has the prettiest views and a local egg breakfast with smoked trout and parmesan cooked and served in a cast iron skillet.
3. Palace Diner – Biddeford, Maine
Built in 1927, this Pollard diner cart is one of two remaining in America. There are deep furrows in the counter from almost one-hundred years of hungry forearms, though the seats nearest the end of the cart have shallower grooves, as naturally, few people want to sit alone. Some new folks recently acquired the business and re-vitalized the menu with local farm fresh meat and produce, great coffee, and hip-hop, while maintaining the original antique environ.
2. Miso soup at our friend Phil’s house
This December, we’ve been meeting at our friend Phil’s house almost every morning to do calisthenics. He makes a pot of great coffee, we do a ninety second plank and discuss our dreams from the night before, twenty minutes of exercise, then miso soup with a fried egg.
1. Silence Heart Nest – Seattle, Washington
Me and Adrianne’s birthdays are a day apart, and this year, we spent our birthday’s apex with dear friends from Iji, Twain, Here We Go Magic, and more at one of the most beautiful breakfast joints in the country, Silence Heart Nest. At the end of his life, the spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy inspired his followers to start a breakfast restaurant in his memory, and it’s filled with his colorful paintings, sunlight, and amazing vegetarian food. They sang us a unique birthday song, gave us laminated birthday placemats, and a birthday pancake.
