Bikini Kill announce NYC & LA reunion shows

Bikini Kill are officially back! They’ve announced reunion shows taking place at LA’s Hollywood Palladium on April 25 and NYC’s Brooklyn Steel on May 31 and Terminal 5 on June 1. They’ll have classic-lineup members Kathleen Hanna on vocals, Tobi Vail on drums, and Kathi Wilcox on bass, and they’ll be joined by Erica Dawn Lyle (Scam Zine, Black Rainbow) on guitar. These are the only three shows announced at the moment and no word yet if they’re planning others. (But we hope so!) Tickets for all shows go on sale Friday (1/18) at 9am PT/12pm ET with AmEx presales for the NYC shows Brooklyn Steel show starting Wednesday (1/16) at 12pm ET (click the venue links above).

Bikini Kill made a surprise, one-off reunion appearance at The Raincoats’ event at The Kitchen in 2017, which was their first time playing together in 20 years. A year earlier, Kathleen Hanna’s band The Julie Ruin performed Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl” on stage. And just a few months ago, Bikini Kill put their discography on streaming services for the first time.

In the time since Bikini Kill broke up, Kathleen Hanna stayed busy with other projects including the aforementioned Julie Ruin as well as Le Tigre and more. Last year, she sang on the new War On Women album and the new album from punk legend Alice Bag. Tobi Vail released an album with her band gSp (aka girlSperm) in 2017.

Between this and yesterday’s Jawbox reunion news (and not to mention the Sleater-Kinney album produced by St. Vincent), 2019 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for ’90s punk.

Update: This post originally mentioned a presale for both NYC shows, though it appears there is only one for Brooklyn Steel.
