Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong is no stranger to playing surprise shows at intimate, Jesse Malin-owned Lower East Side punk venues, and he did just that on New Year’s Eve. Fronting an all-star lineup that included The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson, The E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt, Blondie’s Clem Burke, The Hold Steady’s Tad Kubler, Jesse Malin himself, Jesse’s collaborator Don DiLego, Billie Joe’s sons, and others, Billie Joe and his friends ran through a handful of punk covers including The Replacements’ “Color Me Impressed.” (Billie Joe sang with The Replacements at select shows when they reunited in 2014.)
