Billy Joel's songs are being turned into a TV series

Billy Joel‘s music is already the basis of a hit Broadway musical and now his Intellectual Property songs are inspiring TV series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM Television is partnering with Universal Music Publishing Group for Scenes from an Italian Restaurant (Billy’s favorite of his own songs, apparently), which they are calling an “arc-thology” that will feature characters from Joel’s songs, like Mama Leone and Sgt O’Leary from “Movin’ Out,” the steelworkers of “Allentown,” Captain Jack, The Stranger, The Piano Man, and more. We can hope they’ll also work in the kid that’s trying to keep the water from gushing out of his desk in the “Pressure” video and an anthropomorphic “We Didn’t Start the Fire” list.

Kevin Fox (Law & Order: SVU) is the showrunner and Billy Joel will be a producer, and his entire catalogue will be licensed for the series. MGM TV president of development and production Steve Stark told The Hollywood Reporter, “This series is going to focus less on Billy’s life and more on the stories inside his catalog of classic songs.” Can’t wait!

Meanwhile, Billy Joel’s monthly Madison Square Garden residency continues on Friday (9/26, tickets) and maybe he’ll share some plot details.
