The Black Kids @ Mercury Lounge – 8/25/2013
Florida band Black Kids got a bit of a bum rap, one of the first casualties of the ramped-up hype cycle we now live in. After the shrugs they received from their rushed debut album (less than a year after people went nuts for their free, enjoyable Wizard of Ahhs EP), the band wisely took time out to regroup, finish school and generally live their lives.
Catching a lot of people off guard, a few East Coast dates popped on the radar, including two in NYC which happened over weekend, playing an early show at Mercury Lounge on Friday (8/26) and a late night show at Glasslands on Saturday (8/27), both of which were sold-out. We have pictures from Mercury Lounge in this post, and I made it to the Glasslands show, where the band hit the stage around 1:15 AM or so and played an energetic, tight, fun set.
I couldn’t really get a read on the new material but the songs from Wizard of Ahhhs EP (most of which ended up on the album too) still sounded good, and the crowd at Glasslands was definitely into it (and clearly don’t have to get up as early as I usually do). Frontman Reggie Youngblood didn’t say a whole lot between songs, certainly not anything towards their future plans. But here’s hoping it’s not another five years before we see them again.
