Pete Rock and CL Smooth, back in the day

As always in NYC, there’s tons of stuff going on for golden age hip-hop heads, and here’s a roundup of some of that stuff.

First off, the 2016 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival happened last week and into the weekend (7/13-7/16) with a ton of big names.

The 12th annual festival started on Wednesday (7/13) with a conference held by the Hip-Hop Institute featuring lectures, panels and workshops “dedicated to the study and advancement of issues of entrepreneurship and criminal justice in our community.” Notably, Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson was the keynote speaker.

On Thursday and Friday was the Dummy Clap Film Festival and Juice Hip-Hop Exhibition before the finale concert on Saturday at Brooklyn Bridge Park, where the legendary Nas headlined with Fabolous, Talib Kweli, Rapsody, 9th Wonder, The Soul Rebels, Skyzoo, OSHUN, and more.

If you missed the festival, there was a live stream, a recording of which should be available soon.

Other golden age hip hop shows are on the way. The great Funkmaster Flex is being treated to a birthday bash at BB King Blues Club on August 30 with an all-star lineup of NYC performers. That list includes Black Moon, Smif-N-Wessun, Mobb Deep, Special ED, Das EFX and Talib Kweli. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Also at BB Kings, the legendary Pete Rock & CL Smooth have a show coming up on September 26. That’s in addition to their upcoming Golden Age of Hip Hop show at S.O.B.’s on September 11 (tickets). Tickets for BB King’s are on sale now.

And we recently mentioned those new Public Enemy action figures, designed by artist Ed Piskor. Well, Piskor has a talk and presentation coing up at the Museum of the City as part of their Roz Chast: Cartoon Memoirs exhibition. Piskor will combine visuals and discussion at his presentation, which goes down on August 4. Tickets are free for museum members and available at the door for everyone else.

Oh and don’t forget about that exciting Crystal Pepsi event with Salt ‘n’ Pepa, En Vogue, Biz Markie and more.

And yet another exciting one: Nas just dropped a new song with Erykah Badu. It’s called “Bitter Land” and you can stream it below. The song will appear on the soundtrack to The Land, the Nas-produced film that Erykah Badu stars in. Don’t forget about Erykah’s upcoming Coney Island show and subsequent DJ set at Output on August 3

Meanwhile, in recorded music news, De La Soul continue to prep for the release of their new album …And the Anonymous Nobody, recently sharing a new track called “Royalty Capes. That album drops on August 26, and you can listen to the new track below.
