Today, the second day of the new year, we come to you with the sad news that legendary vocalist Bobby Womack has been diagnosed with early signs of Alzheimer’s disease (via BBC 6 Music). Womack told the BBC’s Gilles Peterson that he’s been having trouble remembering songs that he’s written. “How can I not remember songs that I wrote? That’s frustrating,” he said. He also couldn’t recall the full name of his Bravest Man in the Universe collaborator /co-producer Damon Albarn. “The most embarrassing thing was when we were getting ready to announce Damon and I can’t remember his last name. That’s so embarrassing.”
Womack was hospitalized in the spring of 2012 for treatment of both colon cancer and pneumonia. The Bravest Man in the Universe battled both, and performed a bunch of shows throughout the year (he also had to postpone some). I was able to catch him at the Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements festival in Chicago, where he delivered an extremely moving, festival-closing set. There’s currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, a disease which gets progressively worse with time.
Stay strong, Bobby.
