Whether or not anyone wants to admit it, Lil Nas X was the buzz artist to see at Boston Calling this year.

More than the chorus of “Stressed Out,” more than the catharsis “Take Me to Church,” and perhaps even more than a buzzed, blissed-out rendition of “Sicko Mode,” the two most anticipated minutes of the weekend belonged to the Atlanta rapper’s single “Old Town Road.”

Amidst multiple lineup changes to Boston Calling this year, Lil Nas X was added earlier this spring to help balance Saturday’s musical equation, officially making him the only “special guest performer” to ever be announced as part of the BC lineup.

He emerged tonight (May 25) during Anderson .Paak’s set at the green stage to claim his triumphant two minutes of fame — or more accurately, his seven weeks of fame, seeing that “Old Town Road” has been #1 on Billboard for almost two months now. [Vanyaland]

The 2019 edition of Boston Calling continued on Saturday (5/25) with sets from Tame Impala, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner’s project Big Red Machine, ODESZA, Denzel Curry, Mitski, Clairo, Imogen Heap, Shame, Superorganism, Pile, Princess Nokia, Sidney Gish, and, yes, an appearance from Lil Nas X, who has been defining 2019 with his viral hit “Old Town Road.” Watch a video clip of his appearance below, and check out pictures of the whole day in the gallery above.

Boston Calling wraps up on Sunday – see the set times, and catch up on our coverage of the weekend with pictures from Friday.
