Boyfrndz releasing 'Impulse' (stream 3 tracks)

Don’t let the lack of vowels and the “Z for an S” fool you, Austin’s Boyfrndz are not the next CHVRCHES, MNDR, or Bangerz. (They also aren’t anything like Boy Friend.) Their new LP, Breeder, just came out last week via Brutal Panda, and it’s proggy post-hardcore with techy musicianship and falsetto vocal exercises for days (like with their labelmates Wild Throne, The Mars Volta is a reference point).

I wrote the above about Boyfrndz in 2014 around the time their album Breeder came out. They’re now set to follow it with Impulse on May 27 via Brutal Panda (pre-order), and they’re still working in that same proggy realm with complex guitar riffs and soaring vocals in the upper register. This one was recorded with producer Jeff Zeigler, who you know from his work with The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Nothing and more. We’re premiering the album’s new single “Going Under.” Check that out, with the video for previous single “Ghosted” and a stream of another track “Hiatus,” below.
