boygenius (Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus) announce EP & tour, share 3 songs

First it was confirmed by Phoebe Bridgers that she, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus had a collaborative project in the works; and then they revealed in a Crosby Stills & Nash-referencing photo that they’re called boygenius and their project is coming out on Matador Records. Now, all info is finally here.

boygenius will release a self-titled EP on November 9 via Matador. (The artwork, which is above, uses that same photo.) It has six songs, three of which are streaming: the Lucy Dacus-led “Bite The Hand,” the Phoebe Bridgers-led “Me & My Dog,” and the Julien Baker-led “Stay Down.” All three of these songs keep the anticipation high for this EP. Each one should have no trouble appealing to fans of each lead singer’s respective solo work, and when the three of them harmonize together, boygenius goes into large, rich-sounding territory that’s new for all three of them. Listen for yourself below.

“When we met, Lucy and Phoebe and I were in similar places in our lives and our musical endeavors, but also had similar attitudes toward music that engendered an immediate affinity,” Julien says. “Lucy and Phoebe are incredibly gifted performers, and I am a fan of their art outside of being their friends, but they are also both very wise, discerning and kind people whom I look up to in character as much as in talent.”

The three of them have also announced a tour together, billed as “Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers with Lucy Dacus.” We’re told that it’s “not a ‘boygenius’ tour, they will each be playing their own solo sets, but you never know what surprises might arise.”

“It seemed obvious to record a 7-inch for tour, although many adult men will try to take credit for the idea,” Phoebe says. “When we got together, we had way more songs than we expected and worked so well together, that we decided to make a full EP.” Julien continues, “everyone seemed both confident enough to present ideas and fight for their individual vision, but considerate and humble enough to make decisions which ultimately served the song. It was a process that required a balance of determination and forthrightness with graciousness and pliability, and I think that we all did a good job of enacting that.”

The tour begins in Nashville and that’s immediately followed by two nights in NYC: November 6 & 7 at Brooklyn Steel. Tickets for those shows will be on sale soon. All dates are listed below.

Julien, Phoebe, and Lucy also each have plenty of other upcoming tour dates of their own. Julien’s tour includes Jack Antonoff’s Shadow of the City festival at Asbury Park’s Stone Pony Summer Stage on August 25 (tickets), and Phoebe’s tour includes The National’s There’s No Leaving New York festival at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium on 9/29 & 9/30 (win a VIP experience + hotel stay). All dates for each artist are listed below as well.
