Brainiac

A still-untitled documentary is in the works for ’90s Ohio art punks Brainiac. It’s directed and produced by Eric Mahoney, and it features interviews with Steve Albini, Wayne Coyne, Buzz Osborne, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, David Yow, Eli Janney, Fred Armisen, Jim O’Rourke, Gregg Foreman, John Schmersal, Juan Monasterio, Tyler Trent, Michelle Bodine, Linda Taylor, and more. Watch the trailer below and help raise money for the film via Kickstarter.

There will be a tribute show to Brainiac in Brooklyn and footage from the show will be used in the documentary. It takes place on December 9 at The Bell House with Girls Against Boys headlining. House band The Heist will play, and their impressive lineup will feature Eli Janney (Girls Against Boys), Syd Butler (Les Savy Fav), Marnie Stern, Seth Jabour (Les Savy Fav), Matt Schulz (Holy Fuck, SAVAK), Gregg Foreman (Delta 72), Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole), Travis Morrison (Dismemberment Plan), Peter Aaron (Chrome Cranks), Charles Bissell (The Wrens), and surviving Brainiac members John Schmersal, Juan Monasterio, Tyler Trent and Michelle Bodine. Opening the night will be SAVAK (members of Obits, The Make-Up, Holy Fuck and The Cops). Tickets are on sale now.

Brainiac were around from 1992-1997 and released three full lengths and several splits/EPs, including a few releases on Touch & Go Records. They had planned to release a fourth album on Interscope, until singer Tim Taylor was tragically killed in a car accident, forcing Brainiac to disband. The documentary is being released in tribute to Tim.

Speaking of SAVAK, they have a new album coming out this month. They’re also on tour with Pinback now, playing NYC’s Irving Plaza on Monday (10/8) (tickets). In November, they’ll open part of Hot Snakes’ BrooklynVegan-presented tour, including the sold-out show at The Bell House.
