Brooklyn Mirage still closed; 'Greatest Day Ever' at Governors Island Saturday
Troubled Bushwick nightclub Brooklyn Mirage was shut down by New York authorities for safety violations on June 17. NYC Dept of Buildings inspectors found improperly-built dancing platforms, flammable plywood, and faulty gas piping at the venue, shutting down the 6,000 capacity Bushwick dance venue for the second time after having previously done so in late May. Shows were cancelled or moved to other venues while club organizer Cityfox pursues state clearance.
A Brooklyn Mirage event was thrown last summer at a Bushwick warehouse, and Cityfox subsequently hosted a Halloween 2015 party at the NuHart Plastics factory that was also shut down by authorities citing hazardous conditions. The club had its grand opening at their new location on May 21, boasting incredible amenities for club-goers, including: 180 bathrooms with individual stalls; 28 entry stations, five food stands (with vegan option), 11 bars, a general store, and an indoor stage bigger than the venue’s outdoor space in case of rain. City authorities evidently found the exotic decorations and amenities too good to be true, initially finding the venue to be full of “combustible material” and other fire hazards.
The venue’s woes have only continued. After police busted the venue for serving alcohol without a permit in late May, Williamsburg’s Community Board voted to advise New York state against granting the venue a liquor license. Meanwhile, the venue recently cancelled a show featuring Thievery Corporation, while a June 25 show featuring Steve Bug, Anja Schneider, Doc Martin, and Nikita was moved to nearby Brooklyn venue Output on June 26. A July 3rd event happened at Pier 36.
The Greatest Day Ever, featuring Baauer, Metro Boomin, Grandtheft, Sliink, and Brenmar, was moved to Governors Island where it happens this Saturday (7/9). Tickets are still on sale.
