The ByrdsRoger McGuinn and Chris Hillman are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their classic album and country rock touchstone, Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and played their first of two nights at NYC’s Town Hall on Sunday (9/23). In between songs, Chris and Roger told stories about how the album was made, and they were backed by Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives (Marty also sang lead on a few songs). The night started with a set of earlier Byrds songs that pointed the way to Sweetheart, and they came out for a encore of classic Byrds songs “So You Wanna Be a Rock n’ Roll Star” and “Turn Turn Turn” which bookended a three-song tribute to Tom Petty. Marty Stuart, who was playing Clarence White’s legendary StringBender guitar (which he now owns), and his band also did a couple of their own songs right before the LP portion of the show. Check out the setlist, and video of them playing “Turn Turn Turn” below.

Chris, Roger, Marty and the rest of them do it again tonight which is sold out, but they’ve added a NJ show to the tour: New Bruswick’s State Theatre on October 28. Tickets for that show go on sale Wednesday, September 26 at 10 AM. Updated dates are listed below.
