After an album with his band The Skiffle Players and a great contribution to the massive Grateful Dead tribute album, Cass McCombs released an excellent new solo album, Mangy Love, on ANTI- (which features Angel Olsen). He brought his tour in support of the album to NYC’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday (10/28) for a show that included about half of the new album and plenty of other favorites from throughout his solo career.

It was opened by his ANTI- labelmate Delicate Steve, who joined Cass for a few songs (Steve’s drummer joined Cass too). Following that show, Delicate Steve announced that he’ll release his new album, This Is Steve, on January 27. Steve produced the album himself and played all the instruments on it, and the first single is “Cartoon Rock.” Steve described the song to NPR as “what cartoon music might actually sound like if ZZ Top were the genre’s founding fathers,” and that is truly the best way to describe it. The video was directed by and stars his live bandmate Christian Peslak, who played David Johansen on HBO’s ill-fated VINYL. Watch that video, and check out the album tracklist, below.

Pictures of Steve and Cass at MHOW are in the gallery above. Cass’ setlist is below.
