Charlie Cunningham

Charlie Cunningham teams w/ Maccabees members for new song, touring

UK indie folk singer Charlie Cunningham appears to be gearing up for a followup to his 2017 debut Lines. Earlier this year, he released the new single “Permanent Way” and today he followed it with another new single, “Sink In,” which features three members of the now-defunct UK band The Maccabees (the White brothers: Hugo, Felix, and Will). You can definitely feel the Maccabees’ touch on the new song, while “Permanent Way” has shades of Robin Pecknold and Damien Jurado. Both are pretty promising, and you can stream both below.

Felix White spoke to NME about how the collaboration came to be:

I first met Charlie by introduction, as the only person I knew of anywhere who played flamenco guitar. They’re not that common in Peckham. He very patiently came round to mine every two weeks and taught me for a while. I still haven’t paid him for it, which I feel increasingly guilty about, because I learnt a lot about guitar playing in a very short space of time.

As an accidental result of hanging around a lot, we all begun to make instrumental music together. A lot of it is still in the vaults somewhere, but it birthed beginnings of ‘Sink In’, when Charlie came in with the chord progression. Even then, without words, it was a really moving piece of music.

We played on it really quickly, turning it into the slightly twisted and beautiful thing it is now! When I heard the full version, I was really impressed that he’d managed to retain all the good stuff whilst fleshing it out into the song it is. We’re very proud to have been involved.

Charlie is also about to tour North America opening for RY X, and he’ll play a headlining show in Brooklyn on October 2 at Rough Trade. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (3/15) at noon.

The run with RY X includes a sold-out Brooklyn show on March 23 at Murmrr Theatre. All dates are listed below.
