Charly Bliss share "Chatroom" off new album, announce tour

Charly Bliss recently announced their sophomore album, Young Enough, due out May 10 via Barsuk, and shared its first single, the synthy “Capacity,” with a video directed by Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast. Now they’ve shared the video for second single “Chatroom,” which you can watch below.

Speaking to Jezebel about the song, vocalist Eva Hendricks said:

I was sexually assaulted by someone I dated and I wrote “Chatroom,” and most of Young Enough, as a way of processing that experience and explaining it to myself. “Chatroom” is a song about reaching ecstatic joy through consuming rage. Simply put, it’s a colossal “fuck you” and a celebration of reaching the point of a “fuck you” that isn’t diluted by self-blame or apologies.

I feel so lucky to have worked with Maegan Houang on this video. I felt an immediate sense of mutual trust, and she produced a treatment that directly addresses the themes of trauma, misogyny and mind control without resorting to a literal representation of the lyrics. It’s tonally the darkest video we’ve ever made, and I think it anchors the intent of song which might otherwise be obscured by the fact that it’s also our most direct foray into larger-than-life pop music.

Charly Bliss have also announced a tour in support of Young Enough. After a few East Coast dates this month, they head down to Austin, TX for SXSW where they play a few shows, including the BrooklynVegan official SXSW showcase at Scoot Inn on Saturday, March 16. That show is part of Brooklyn Bowl Family Reunion and in partnership with Shout It Out Loud Music, and the lineup also includes …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead (performing Madonna), Ringo Deathstarr, Weakened Friends, and Grim Streaker. Hope to see you there!

After SXSW, Charly Bliss head overseas for dates in Europe and the UK in May, then return to North America for more dates in June and July. Those dates include a headlining show at Bowery Ballroom on July 12, 2019. Tickets go on sale Friday 3/8 at noon, with a Citi cardmember presale happening now.
