Chelsea Music Hall

Chelsea Music Hall opens under Chelsea Market

Chelsea Music Hall is a new venue in the basement of NYC’s Chelsea Market (the entrance is at 407 West 15th St between 9th & 10th Ave). This is the space that at one point was to be branded a reincarnated Gerde’s Folk City. That didn’t end up being the name, but it’s still being run in part by restaurateurs Michael Barrett and Michael Ginsberg (who were attached to the Gerde’s announcement). Sergei Sklyarenko (Sullivan Room) and Chip Quigley (Kingdom Entertainment) round out the team of partners.

They plan to host live music, DJs, comedy, art, theatre, and private events, and there’s food. Israeli celebrity chef, Eyal Shani of Chelsea Market’s very popular Miznon restaurant, will handle the menu at the club. The venue has been in soft open mode since mid-September with a few shows happening, including Seth Herzog’s SWEET 14th Anniversary celebration (which we hear almost had to move last minute due to construction related water issues).

The kitchen opens on Friday, October 19 which is also the next scheduled event, a weekly Friday night dance party called “Soul in the Horn.” There isn’t very much else on the schedule yet, but four days a week will be dedicated to Cleopatra which is a “fusion of music, dance, fashion, theater and nightlife” starring RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Dusty Ray Bottoms:

The legendary Queen of the Nile is throwing one of her famously lavish parties to celebrate the Empire’s latest triumphs over Rome, and you are invited to attend. Inside the palace, drinks flow and music seduces as guests are met with every indulgence. But outside the city walls, the alluring Marc Antony beckons, the nefarious Octavian lurks, and Cleopatra’s enemies plot a violent end to her prosperous reign. The Queen better watch her back.

Previews for Cleopatra begin October 23 and tickets are on sale now.

Also on the schedule: comedy show “Bird Brain” on October 22 that’s hosted by Alzo Slade and featuring Emily Blotnick, Chris DiStefano, Chloe Hilliard, Sam Jay, and Nimesh Patel (tickets).
