The Hecks have been clattering around Chicago for a while now, with a dark, paranoid sound that’s a bit like the walls caving in — but recorded through various angles, filters and tape speeds. They are capable of industrial ambient drones, scratchy pop, sharp-angled rippers — all with an unsettling vibe that puts them in the same company as Spray Paint, the work of Lars Finberg (The Intelligence, A-Frames), Thee Oh Sees at their weirdest and, of course, a variety of 1980-era post-punk acts.

Having released an EP in 2012, The Hecks are now signed to Trouble in Mind who will release their self-titled album on September 2. The album cover featuring a building facade bathed in sunlight (shot in stark black and white by reknowned architectural photographer Richard Nickel) sets the mood. You can check out “The Thaw” from the album below.

No tour news at the moment, but The Hecks will play Chicago’s The Owl on July 3 with Erica Esso and Wages. More info here. Check out album art, tracklist and song stream below.
