The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Twin Shadow, and Weakness played Lincoln Hall both Wednesday night (4/27), and Thursday night (4/28).
Cincinnati, OH's Weakness, started things off with their special blend of 90's power pop, and punk. The young band was extremely reminiscent of early Les Savy Fav, and Titus Andronicus. While running through short, spazzy tracks, singer Kevin Doyle pulled out some interesting dance moves ala Iggy Pop.
Twin Shadow's set began with the Forget LP track "Shooting Holes," incorporating a wall of swirling synth textures. Migrating to a full band lineup, mastermind George Lewis has crafted something syrupy sounding, and quite infectious. Thanks to bassist Russell Manning, and keyboardist Wynne Bennett; three part harmonies were skillfully executed throughout the band's set. Searing 80's guitar tone in tow, a myriad of textures filtered out through the house speakers. Set highlights included; a stripped down intro to the fan favorite "Slow," and fittingly, set wrap up with the Forget LP title track.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have had one hell of a year! On the heels of their extremely well received sophomore LP Belong, (produced and mixed by enigmatic genius Mark "Flood" Ellis, and Alan Moulder respectively) the NYC-based band has opted to tour until they drop as it seems. On Belong, you'll find a very beefed-up group which is more akin to how they sounded this past Thursday night. At the root of their tone lies fuzzed out guitars, reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. The five members seem to complement each other in ways that other bands spend their entire careers trying to nail down. With confidence, poise, and enthusiasm the group quickly turned Lincoln Hall into an all-out 90's rock show.
If you weren't able to grab tickets to their pair of Lincoln Hall shows don't fret; the group will be back shortly for Lollapalooza 2011!
