Surfer Blood

On Tuesday night (1/17), Surfer Blood played a last minute show at Schubas with support from Cross Record.

Cross Record, the project of Chicago via Florida singer-songwriter Emily Cross, played a mellow opening set. Featuring a three-piece horn section, guitarist, and drummer, Emily's simple ballads came to life in the live setting. Her music has an airy, ethereal quality about it paired with a fantastic yet understated voice. The project recently launched a Kickstarter page to fund the recording of a full length LP. Take a listen to Cross Record's music via bandcamp and donate to their Kickstarter if you feel so inclined.

Surfer Blood, who have been camped out in nearby Crystal Lake, IL recording a new EP at Chrome Attic Studios (and who were spotted hanging out at various Tomorrow Never Knows shows), headlined the very late show (they didn't go on until about midnight).

Presumably they needed to escape the studio for a bit and booked the Tuesday night performance in order to showcase some new material. A few new songs made their live debut at Schubas, the most impressive being a track titled "Bird For You." It kicks off with a driving punk beat followed by thick and dirty guitar lines. Think fuel-injected Astrocoast. Speaking of which, they also played hits from the debut LP. "Floating Vibes," "Swim," and "Take It Easy" all made their way onto the setlist.

More new ones were played too, but unfortunately like the night as a whole, those came off a bit flat and unexciting. Maybe it was the strange situation that included borrowed gear and, well, new songs, but they didn't sound like their usual, cohesive selves.

Some more pictures from the late show (Pomegranates and Slowdance played the early one at the venue), including one of the setlist, below..
