Grizzly Bear at the Riv on 9.30.2012
Grizzly Bear

On the final day of September (Sunday, September 30), Grizzly Bear brought their tour in support of Shields through Chicago for a performance at the Riviera Theatre.

They began their sold-out show with a trio of songs from Shields -- "Speak In Rounds," "Adelma," and "Sleeping Ute." The three cuts, which also serve as the opening of Shields, have helped to usher in a new era for the group. Shields is one of the finest releases of 2012, and they've refined their live show a great deal in order to showcase that. Grizzly Bear's new lighting setup-- think commercial-grade fishing lures combined with scientific specimen jars-- made its debut during "Sleeping Ute," and proceeded to rise in and fall away for the remainder of their set.

"Lullaby" from 2006's Yellow House came next, which one concertgoer decided he was going to crowd surf to. The track does start to build about halfway through, but I can't say I was expecting that (neither was Ed Droste). Nevertheless, part of that build was created by Mr. Droste, who produced waves of feedback by running distortion through his autoharp. "Yet Again" took us back to Shields, and then the group pulled out "Shift" from their 2004 debut album Horn of Plenty, the only song they'd be performing from that LP. The lo-fi track has been transformed to fit in with their newer material, and now features a three-part harmony from Chris Taylor, Ed Droste, and Daniel Rossen.

Live standouts included "Ready, Able" and "While You Wait for the Others," both bouncy and anthemic songs from Veckatimest, which the audience sang along loudly to. Grizzly Bear polished off their set with the Shields closer "Sun In Your Eyes," a powerful and emotion-filled resolution. After much applause from the crowd, they returned to the stage for the three-song encore of "Knife," "On a Neck, On a Spit," and a stripped-down acoustic version of "All We Ask."

Tourmates Lower Dens got the crowd warmed up, and more pictures of both acts, Grizzly Bear's setlist, and some videos are below...
