Swim Ignorant Fire is the moniker of Chicago-based experimental musician Stephen Holliger. According to his bandcamp, Holliger has been operating under the name for quite a few years now, and welcomed his latest LP, Weddings & Funerals, back in July. The six-track album is a strong collection of ambient drone material, with hints of folk and electronica thrown in there. Weddings & Funerals begins with an ethereal tune titled "In the Interval between Grasp & Reach." The song builds from bright guitar lines to fuzzy distortion, by way of calming swells that slowly start to increase in intensity. In the last minute or so of the close-to-nine-minute song, that fuzzy distortion fades away to reveal a fish tank filter-like tone. The relaxing "A Clean Cut" comes next, which features fingerpicked acoustic guitar. That acoustic guitar piece is accompanied by a beat-- built by lightly drumming on the body of the guitar-- as well as some tremolo picking on an electric guitar. One of the more impressive songs on the album is called "Devil in her Eyes & A God in his Heart." It starts off like potentially any intricate folk tune, but then the vocals come in. Holliger opted to bury them in the background but instead of under massive amounts of reverb-- the extremely irritating norm these days-- the vocal effects he used make his voice sound like gusts of wind. Stream "In the Interval between Grasp & Reach" and "The Creak of Wood & A Burning Fire" at the bottom of this post, and take a listen to Weddings & Funerals in its entirety via bandcamp.

Post-Thanksgiving, Swim Ignorant Fire will be performing at the Life is Art variety show on November 29 at Transamoeba Studios. After that, he'll be embarking on a weekend Midwest tour in December, which begins on the 7th of the month and culminates with a hometown show on the 9th. That show was originally going to be held at The Whip, which is sadly closing its doors, so Holliger and co. are currently looking for a new space. RA-YIN (of Golden Birthday), Jimmy Whispers, and Handsome Tyrants are also on the bill. Stay tuned for more information on a Chicago show.

UPDATE: Swim Ignorant Fire's hometown show is happening on December 9 at the Canvas.
