Right now, hundreds--maybe thousands--of teenagers are enjoying their successful pilgrimage to the desert of Indio, California, some hundred miles East of Los Angeles, for the first of two weekends of sweat, music, drugs, and Lindsay Lohan at the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival. They're supposed to be in high school. And back in L.A., administrators and teachers at some of the top schools that have struggled to contend with the empty classrooms of Coachella Fridays are finally learning how to deal with absence in the age of the music festival. The rite of Southern California spring, these educators say, is now something of an acknowledged right. [Atlantic Wire]Coachella 2013 is underway and streaming live. Our Day One pictures start over at BrooklynVegan and continue here at BV Chicago. Many more below...

Friday night (December 9), Bon Iver played their second Chicago show of 2011, this time at the 10,000-person capacity stadium, UIC Pavilion.
English singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas got things started. Her soulful, eclectic voice was accompanied by well-arranged, finger-picked sections on an electric guitar. Song narratives, which she announced before playing each one, dealt with love, hate, and the stupidity of ex-boyfriends. With one EP (Lost & Found; Rough Trade - 2011) to her name, and a full-length in the works, I'm hard-pressed to believe that this is the last you'll be hearing of Lianne.
After a short set changeover, the 9-piece Bon Iver took the stage, launching directly into their 2011 self-titled album's percussive opener, "Perth." An ambient interlude brought the gentlemen directly into "Minnesota, WI," exactly as the record does. Frontman Justin Vernon then gripped the mic and calmly said to the massive crowd, "Hello, everyone." He said this was their first basketball stadium before introducing "Towers," which is apparently about college basketball (Was this taken into account while booking the gig?)
Even under these massive conditions, the extremely talented band were able to pull off bone-chilling renditions of their recorded material. For me, this manifested most in "Michicant." There's a certain airy, hushed feel on the track - you can almost feel Vernon's breath between lines and they were able to make that happen live.
On separate occasions, we received spotlight solos from two of the band's most prolific members; violinist Rob Moose and avant-saxophonist Colin Stetson. Original (4-piece) Bon Iver-member Sean Carey (who just played a sold out, solo show at Schubas) sang on most songs from behind his drumset. At first glace, the lineup size seems excessive, but each musician brings something specific and worthy to the proverbial table. No song was played verbatim to its studio version (nor should they have been). Tracks like the already-thickly layered "Creature Fear," saw waves of searing guitars and pounding percussion.
Vernon, now on stage by himself, played For Emma, Forever Ago's final track, "re: stacks." The full band then returned for "Calgary," "Beth / Rest," and "The Wolves (Act I and II)." After a quick exit, and a few minutes of cheering from thousands of people, a three song encore of "Flume," "Skinny Love," and finally "For Emma," which Vernon said was for "all his old-time peeps in the audience," was had.
It's pretty clear that the now-Grammy nominated Vernon has been grappling with fame lately, but he hasn't lost one ounce of his charm: still just the same guy from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
More pictures of Bon Iver's set (none of the opener unfortunately), some videos, and the setlist, below..

The Rosebuds opened the sold out Bon Iver show at the Chicago Theatre with a relaxing set of straightforward indie rock, kept afloat by their talented drummer. The mix had too much low frequency, making the keyboard and soft vocals of Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp quieter than they should have been, but it was still evident that they are great vocalists. Howard's guitar had a vaguely gritty tone, giving it a darker vibe, and the band rocked for a brief, dynamic moment in the middle of the performance. The bassist picked up a violin for "Come Visit Me," starting with short, staccato bowing, increasing the length of the notes as the song went on. "Woods" was one of the more upbeat performances, with airy, yet defined keys. A series of tight drum fills built momentum before the song dropped off to only Howard and his guitar, and the band worked their way back up to finish the set.
The excited cheers of the sold-out crowd greeted the nine, extremely talented members of Bon Iver's live band as they took the stage. Justin Vernon began playing "Perth," and the two drum set players joined in, making it much more dynamic than the version on the new self-titled album. The French horn, trumpets, trombone, clarinet, and saxophones left even more of an impression, building textures for Vernon's strong, clear voice. "Perth" ended with the ambient noise from which "Minnesota, WI" emerged. The drums that subtly enter two and a half minutes into the recording were positively thunderous in the live setting, and the accompanying light show was as energetic and warm as the music.
The wind and brass musicians played "Hinnom, TX" with the soft beauty of a baroque composition. The backing vocalists' falsetto voices are as pleasant as Vernon's, who has become great at switching back and forth between that and his normal range. They played "Creature Fear," building directly into "Team," ending with the guitarists making ambient drones and crinkles over the pulsing drums. Vernon did a solo performance of "Re: Stacks" and the band returned for "Calgary." They followed with a cover of Bjork's "Who Is It", though Vernon decided he wasn't going to reveal what the song was, sarcastically adding, "That's how you become cool, you keep things from other people." The trombone/trumpet/percussion player [Reggie Pace] beat-boxed a careful and detailed recreation of the Bjork recording's beat along with acoustic drum accents on the bass and snare. Vernon instructed the crowd to sing along to "The Wolves (Act I and II)" beginning softly and building throughout each chorus. The lyrics were "What might have been lost," resulting in an emotional effect similar to the repeating choruses of Low's music.
"There's a cousin of the family of the band with a baby in her belly, and we're trying to get it out. Let's make it happen tonight," Vernon said before the encore performance of "Skinny Love" with the band standing behind him as backing vocalists and the drummers at their sets. He used an old hollow bodied guitar with cello-like f-holes on either side of the strings that had a distinct buzzy timbre. They closed with "For Beth/Rest," driven by the much talked about Bruce Hornsby-sounding, synthesized electric piano.

The Rosebuds are set to release their fifth LP, titled Loud Planes Fly Low on June 7th via Merge Records. Care of a widget below, you can download the album track "Second Bird of Paradise" (for the price of your email address).
After The Rosebuds released Life Like, their fourth album for Merge Records, the marriage that inspired the band ended. Ivan and Kelly were done, and The Rosebuds--Merge's buoyant pop-rock couple who'd youthfully named their first album The Rosebuds Make Out--were in limbo. But Loud Planes Fly Low, The Rosebuds' fifth and most inventive album to date, is a sad-eyed and bright new start for Kelly and Ivan, beautifully born of the struggle to define their relationship as bandmates--and more importantly, friends--outside of the context of marriage. It wasn't easy. Written and rewritten, recorded and re-recorded in fits and starts, Loud Planes Fly Low allowed Kelly and Ivan to have the very conversations about their relationship that they'd long avoided. [Merge]
They'll embark on a headlining tour in support of the LP starting June 10th, in their home state of North Carolina. The tour will wrap up in late July, just in time to head out with Bon Iver as the supporting act on their 2011 Summer Tour.
