English musician Emma "Scout" Niblett welcomed her new album, It's Up To Emma, earlier this week via Drag City. It's her first since 2010's The Calcination of Scout Niblett, and is lead by the single "Gun." On "Gun," Niblett channels the raw power of PJ Harvey and angular guitar chops of Kurt Cobain as she sneers, "I think I'm gonna buy me a gun / A nice little silver one." You can check out the video for the track at the bottom of this post. The remainder of the album is great too, and you can grab a copy via Drag City's webstore.
Niblett's about to hit the road in Europe in support of It's Up to Emma, and will head stateside in late-August for a North American run. Dope Body will act as main support on many of her North American dates, including a performance at the Hideout on September 21. Ticketing information for the Chicago show is forthcoming, but check Ticketfly for updates.

Purling Hiss @ NYC's Bowery Ballroom in 2011 (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Philly rockers Purling Hiss welcomed their new album, Water on Mars, last week via Drag City Records. Water on Mars is their first for the label and the most high quality material they've released thus far. Thankfully, they haven't gone and polished up too much - the fuzz-laden influence of Dinosaur Jr. comes across loud and clear. Grab the album's lead single "Mercury Retrograde" and the top of this post and/or stream it below.
Purling Hiss will be embarking on a U.S. tour next month before heading to Europe for all of May. That tour includes a FREE show at the Empty Bottle on April 15 with support from Teepee and Axis:sovA. No RSVP is needed.
All Purling Hiss tour dates and a stream of "Mercury Retrograde" are below...

The exhibition's opening reception will be taking place on November 16, and will feature Al, Rob, and DJ duo Creatures of the Wind.
Ty Segall @ The Well in September (BKLYN) (more by Gabi Porter)
As mentioned, Ty Segall's new album (and third this year), Twins, hits stores today (10/9) via Drag City. Unlike Green Day, who are already off to a bad three-album-series start with ¡Uno!, each one of Ty's releases this year have been better than the next. Twins being no exception to that rule. Ty has also announced plans for a 2013 tour in support of Twins, which sees him heading back to Chicago on February 9 to headline the Empty Bottle. Advance tickets for that show are on sale now.

DOWNLOAD: Sun Araw - "Like Wine" (MP3)
Sun Araw (aka Cameron Stallones) is set to release his new album, The Inner Treaty, on September 18 via Drag City and his own Sun Ark label. The LP was written and performed entirely by Stallones and mastered by Sonic Boom (aka Peter Kember). The Inner Treaty serves as the follow-up to 2011's great Ancient Romans, and you can download its lead single "Like Wine" at the top of this post.
Stallones recently released ICON GIVE THANK, a collaboration with The Congos and M. Geddes Gengras. You can stream the album in its entirety at the bottom of this post.
Cameron seems to be beginning to announce a fall North American tour. One of his few announced dates at the moment is a Chicago show at the Empty Bottle on September 25, with Deep Magic and Weyes Blood. Advance tickets are on sale.
All known Sun Araw dates and a stream of ICON GIVE THANK are below...

White Fence (L) & Ty Segall (R) (photo by Ruth Swanson)
Golden state garage rockers Ty Segall and White Fence (aka Tim Presley) have announced that they'll be releasing a collaborative LP, titled Hair, this April via Drag City Records. As SPIN reports, Ty handled skin bashing duties as well as rhythm guitar, while Tim recorded bass and lead guitar. Keep an eye out for a full North American tour in support of the album. Currently there are two late-May dates that jive with this, one of which is a performance at Chicago's Lincoln Hall on the 10th of the month. And just to make the show damn near irresistible, the Strange Boys will play an opening set. Tickets go on sale TODAY (2/3), at noon CST.
White Fence will also be releasing his own record this year, a double album titled Family Perfume, on April 3rd via Woodist. Ty is currently at work on a follow-up to 2011's excellent Goodbye Bread, tentatively set for a September release via Drag City Records. The two will play a few shows together in early March, before Tim joins up with Thee Oh Sees in route to SXSW.

Along his travels Bonny some how managed to find himself on the island of Hawaii and met up with the Kona Coffee people. After rigorous experiments with bean burning, granulated sugar filtering, boll weevil cross pollination and button pressing (always the most critical part of any operation, including our own. Lever-pullers, shut you mouth!), this limited edition roast is ready to be bought. We'll leave the food and coffee pairings up to you. Kona's "Bonnie Billy Blend" is available for purchase via Drag City.
Each half pound of whole beans comes in a re-sealable black bag complete with a one of a kind pink label to certify the clean body and fresh finish (and deep paranoia) you expect from the Bonny brand. It tastes best when paired with Wolfroy Goes To Town, but it's also not bad with chewing gum, hash browns (or hash, browns), garden heirlooms, sour patch gummies, cough drops, foodstuff, ulcers, dandelions, hot dogs and turkey necks. [Drag City]

Chicago-based independent record label Thrill Jockey are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a bunch of reissues from seminal artists, plus some new releases too.
All six of Tortoise's albums and two 7"s (Mosquito, Lonesome Sound), six Sea and Cake records, four Trans Am LPs, the Fiery Furnaces' I'm Going Away, Califone's Roomsound and Heron King Blues, and many more releases will be repressed this year. New releases from Golden Void, Golden Retriever, Barn Owl's Jon Porras, Yob's Mike Scheidt, Plankton Wat, kandodo, and Man Forever will all hit the stores in 2012.
Speaking of Tortoise, tickets are still available for their January 24th performance at the Empty Bottle. As mentioned, band member John McEntire is keeping busy this month, recording Anatomy of Habit at Soma Studios.
In semi-related news, Chicago indie label Drag City's preview party for their film Dragonslayer is TONIGHT (1/18), at Rodan. The documentary will premiere at The Music Box on the 24th, along with performances by Mayor Daley and Bitchin Bajas (members of CAVE). More information HERE.

Seminal Chicago label Drag City Records are getting ready to premiere their second-ever feature length film, Dragonslayer, on home turf. In conjunction with Killer Films, the label bring you a tale of youth in revolt, centered around the skateboarding scene in Fullerton, California.
Directed by Tristan Patterson and executive produced by indie-maverick Christine Vachon, Dragonslayer is the Grand Jury Prize Winner for Best Documentary at SXSW 2011.Patterson on the documentary's main subject:
An intimate vérité portrait of the life and times of Josh "Skreech" Sandoval, a 23-year-old skate legend from the stagnant suburbs of Fullerton, California, Dragonslayer takes the viewer through a golden SoCal haze of lost youth, broken homes and abandoned swimming pools, set to a soundtrack of bands from indie-rock labels Mexican Summer and Kemado Records-including Best Coast, Bipolar Bear, Children, Dungen, Jacuzzi Boys, Little Girls and The Soft Pack--as well as Death and Thee Oh Sees.
I met Skreech at a party in an abandoned airfield off the I-10 in Chino, California right after our country's economic collapse. He had a lime-green Mohawk and was wearing a matching Screamers T-shirt in honor of the L.A. punk band that never recorded an album. He looked malnourished and lost, and claimed he was on 5 tabs of acid. It was impossible to talk to him; his head was lost in the clouds. Then I saw him skate.Dragonslayer will make its Chicago premiere at The Music Box on January 25th. Tickets are $10 per person.
I think Skreech is like a lot of kids from his generation--smart enough to know a potentially bleak future looms and scrambling to figure out a way to survive in it. He's also on a wavelength all his own. Dragonslayer is my attempt to capture this wavelength and preserve it.
As noted in the flyer above, Drag City are also hosting a preview party at Wicker Park's Rodan this coming Wednesday (1/18). From 7-10PM you can catch clips from the film and label staff spinning (hopefully vinyl).
Check out the official trailer for the documentary, below..

Billboard has named HoZac, Drag City, Kranky, and Jagjaguwar in its top 50 independent US labels list.
Check out a blurb about each, directly below..
HoZac Records (9)
Since 2006, this Chicago vinyl label has focused on endearingly distorted, underground rock'n'roll, reminding us why an ears-to-the-ground approach to music pays off--they released the first LP from recent break-out band Smith Westerns in 2009, as well as the debut EP 7" EP from LA popsmiths Dum Dum Girls, now with Sub Pop, in 2008.
Drag City Records (34)
Not just a gold mine for mind-blowing folk and psychedelic reissues, Drag City's catalog is alive and well with new artists, responsible for the latest from Ty Segall, Joanna Newsom and Scout Niblett.
Go-to label for eccentric architects of thundering towers of sound like Tim Hecker and Deerhunter or dissonant punks like Disappears. As explicitly stated on the label's site, their high-brow and selective operation seldom deviates from its "very specific aesthetic," which vacillates between chaos and opioid ambience.
