Mutual Benefit @ Pitchfork Fest 2014 (more by James Richards IV)
Mutual Benefit tagged Chicago last weekend to play Pitchfork Fest 2014, and have since expanded their fall North American tour. That run now includes a show at the Empty Bottle on September 25 with support from Ricky Eat Acid. Advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now.

Iceage in Portland in 2013 (more by Autumn Andel)
Denmark punks Iceage are still working on their third full-length (no hard details yet), but that hasn't stopped them from announcing a North American tour with London experimentalist Helm. They land in Chicago for a show at the Empty Bottle on October 22 with additional support from Father Murphy. Tickets for that show go on sale on Monday (7/28) at 10AM CST.

Merchandise @ Schubas in June (more by Milos Markicevic)
Merchandise's 4AD debut After The End is due to hit stores in about a month (on 8/25), and the band have now shared a new video for the LP's second single "Enemy." The clip was directed by Tim Saccenti and draws inspiration from filmmaker greats Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger and William Eggleston. You can check it out at the bottom of this post.
Merchandise have also announced a fall North American tour with direct support from like-minded Danish quartet Lower. That tour includes a show at the Empty Bottle on October 10 with additional support from local outfit Final Grin. Advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now.

Earth @ NYC's Le Poisson Rouge, June 2011 (more by Greg Cristman)
Dylan Carlson's mighty Earth are slated to welcome their 10th album, titled Primitive And Deadly, in September via Southern Lord. The LP features a slew of guest vocalists and instrumentalists including the incomparable Mark Lanegan, Rabia Shaheen Qazi (Rose Windows), Bill Herzog (Sunn O))), Brett Netson (Built To Spill), and Jodie Cox (Narrows). Qazi provides vocals on the LP's lead single "From the Zodiacal Light" which is available to stream over at Pitchfork.
After a lengthy summer European run, Earth will be touring throughout North America with support from King Dude this fall. That tour includes a show at the Empty Bottle on September 29. Tickets for the Chicago show go on sale this Friday (7/18) at 10AM CST.

Lee Fields & the Expressions at West Fest on 07.12.2014
West Fest 2014 kicked off yesterday afternoon (Saturday, July 12) with performances from Lee Fields & the Expressions, Pink Avalanche, Jevon Jackson, Ssion, and many more across two stages. Chicago-based heavy shoegaze // dreampop outfit Lightfoils are slated to welcome their debut full-length effort, Hierarchy, next week (on 7/8) via Saint Marie Records. The LP was produced by the all-things-heavy expert Sanford Parker, and serves as the follow-up to their 2012 self-titled EP. They've already shared the LP's lead single "Diastolic," and its pulsating second single "Mock Sun" makes its premiere in this post. You can check out both tracks below. Hierarchy is up for preorder via Saint Marie's webstore.
Lightfoils will be celebrating the release of Hierarchy with a show at the Empty Bottle on July 8 with A Sunny Day in Glasgow (who recently released a new LP of their own). Advance tickets are still available. They'll also play the Double Door on August 9 with American Cosmonaut (tickets).

The Young -- Chrome Cactus cover art
Austin band The Young are slated to release the follow-up to 2012's Dub Egg, titled Chrome Cactus, on August 26 via Matador. You can get a feel for the LP by checking out its lead single "Metal Flake" at the bottom of this post.
The Young will be embarking on a North American tour in support of Chrome Cactus in late-August. That tour includes a show at the Empty Bottle on September 18 with Sex Snobs. Advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now.

Brooklyn experimentalists Oneida have announced that they'll be embarking on a summer North American tour in mid-July. That tour includes a show at the Empty Bottle on July 30 with support from local krautrock favorites CAVE. Advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now. Oneida are also readying a tour-only cassette called The Brah Tapes, which is a collection of live and studio material from the past five years. The tape track "RPT" made its premiere via BrooklynVegan and is also available to stream at the bottom of this post.

Lee Fields & the Expressions welcomed their new album, titled Emma Jean, earlier this month via Truth & Soul Records. The LP serves as the follow-up to 2012's Faithful Man, and the effort is available to stream at the bottom of this post. The music video for album opener "Just Can't Win" can also be found below.

West Fest 2014 is slated to take place on July 12 & 13 on West Chicago Avenue (between North Damen Avenue & North Wood Street) in West Town. The Empty Bottle-programmed main stage features Lee Fields & The Expressions, Death (who also play the Empty Bottle on July 12), Protomartyr, Ryley Walker, Pink Avalanche, Turquoise Jeep (yes, them), Turn To Crime, Mannequin Men, and more. You can check out the complete lineup with set times at the bottom of this post. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 per day.

Pitchfork Music Festival 2014 is just a month away (July 18-20), and a bunch of fest aftershows have now been announced. There are a few slated to take place around the corner from Union Park at Bottom Lounge, and others at Schubas and Lincoln Hall.

The Sidekicks @ Brooklyn's Saint Vitus in 2013 (more by Vladislav Grach)
The Sidekicks, Sundials, and Chicago's own Dowsing are joining forces for a summer US tour. That tour kicks off in late-July and includes a show at Township on August 1. Ticketing information for the Chicago show is forthcoming, but you can check Ticketweb for updates.
Sidekicks frontman Steve Ciolek is also a member of Saintseneca, who are slated to play the Empty Bottle on June 15 (tickets). Dowsing guitarist/vocalist Erik Czaja's other project Kittyhawk just recently signed with Count Your Lucky Stars, who will release their debut LP, Hello, Again, in October. They'll play Township on July 26 with Weatherbox and Dikembe (tickets).

North Carolina garage punks Flesh Wounds welcomed their new Bitter Boy 7" last month via local indie heavyweights Merge Records. It's a killer nab for Merge, who don't typically deal in snarling, harder-edged garage stompers, yet it's a nice change all the same. You can give the single's A-side "Bitter Boy" a spin at the bottom of this post. The tune is backed by both "Kennel Cough" and "Let Me Be Clear," and 7"s are available for purchase via Merge's webstore. You can also hear the full 7" via Merge Radio. In addition to "Bitter Boy," a stream of their 2014 self-titled 7" can also be found below.
Flesh Wounds will be embarking on a June US tour next week, which surrounds their appearance(s) at the 2014 Northside Music Festival. That tour includes a show at the Empty Bottle on June 19 with Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel. Advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now.

Reigning Sound @ Wicker Park Fest 2013 (more by Lindsey Best)
Long-running garage rock crew Reigning Sound are slated to welcome their new album, Shattered, on July 15 via new home Merge Records. The LP's lead single "Falling Rain" is just as solid as anything in their back catalog, and you can take a listen to the tune at the bottom of this post. RS have been doing some touring in support of the album and will be hitting the road again come July. That tour includes a show at the Empty Bottle on September 1, and advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now.

The experimental trio of Stephen O'Malley (who we recently interviewed), Keiji Haino, and Oren Ambarchi (aka Nazoranai), played an Empty Bottle-presented Red Bull Sound Select show at the Empty Bottle on May 20. The show was part of a handful of North American gigs for the musicians who count SunnO))) and Khanate among their other projects.

Pink Mountaintops @ the Vic Theatre in February (more by James Richards IV)
Stephen McBean's Pink Mountaintops resurfaced this year with Get Back, their first new effort in five-years. The collective are currently on tour throughout North America and will be heading to Europe for most of June. They'll return stateside for another run of dates in July, which includes a performance at the Empty Bottle on July 23. Advance tickets for the Chicago show are on sale now.

Morgan Delt @ Austin Psych Fest 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
Delightfully twisted Los Angeles psych rock auteur Morgan Delt welcomed his fantastic self-titled LP in late-January via Chicago's own Trouble in Mind. It's some truly brain-scrambling stuff (in a good way), and you take take a listen to the album in its entirety at the bottom of this post. Delt, who just recently played Austin Psych Fest, will be opening a handful of Midwest dates for The Flaming Lips in June/July. Before that run kicks off, Delt will tag Chicago for a free show at the Empty Bottle on June 9 with Verma and Canada's Crosss. Verma headline in celebration of their forthcoming TiM LP Sunrunner, and no RSVP is needed.

Los Angeles three-piece Cherry Glazerr welcomed their fuzzed-out debut LP, Haxel Princess, earlier this year via Burger Records. They do jangly pop quite well, with big riffs and lots of attitude. Detroit protopunk unit Death just recently welcomed another album of archival material via Drag City. Death III is said to be the "final missile from the vault of Death" and the collection hit stores on April 22. Death also appear to be announcing a summer North American tour. Only a couple of shows have been announced so far, including a performance at the Empty Bottle on July 12. Tickets are on sale now.
