Courtney Barnett @ BV-CMJ 2013 (more by Chris La Putt)
Melbourne singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett welcomed her great double EP, A Sea of Split Peas, earlier this year via her own Milk! Records. As we said on BrooklynVegan, "She's got the hazy harmonies and textures of Summer of Love psych pop with clever lyrics that she nonchalantly speak-sings like a slacker Bob Dylan." The whole thing is great; I'm particularly partial to the collection's fuzzy second half. Give it a spin at the bottom of this post.
Barnett and her band will be heading stateside in February for a brief tour. That tour includes a performance at the Empty Bottle on February 18. Tickets for the Chicago show go on sale this Friday (11/8) at 10AM CST.

Meat Wave @ Wicker Park Fest 2013 (more by Kirstie Shanley)
If you haven't become familiar with the scorching tunes of Chicago post-punks Meat Wave yet, I'd suggest you get well acquainted. The trio put out their excellent self-titled debut last October via Let's Pretend Records and have been touring hard in support of it. They just recently played an Epitonic Saki Session with Geronimo!, and audio from that session should be up soon. The Chicago Reader filmed a bit of footage of their performance for their Soundcheck series, which you can check out at the bottom of this post.
Meat Wave have been added to next week's previously discussed Screaming Females, Waxahatchee, and Tenement show at Lincoln Hall on September 25 (tickets). They'll then play The Observatory on October 4 with Kal Marks, Geronimo!, The New Diet, and My Dad. They've also got one more hometown show on the horizon: a performance at the Empty Bottle on November 2 with Mannequin Men (tickets).
Video footage from their Epitonic Saki Session and a stream of their self-titled effort lie after the jump...

Earlier this summer, Empty Bottle owner Bruce Finkelman closed a deal on Pilsen's historic Thalia Hall, a four-story giant located near the 18th Street Pink Line stop. Thalia, opened by John Dusek in 1892, originally served as a public house. So far, Finkelman and co. have split the large space into two distinct parts: a tavern called Dusek's and a separate basement bar dubbed the Punch House. Thalia's theatre will eventually host live music, and new businesses will be moving into its retail spaces. Modern Cooperative, a vintage furniture shop, and Belli's, a health food store // juice bar, are the first two confirmed shops. Punch House and Dusek's are slated to open their doors on September 17.
Stay tuned for more information.
Thee Oh Sees @ Pitchfork Festival 2012 (more by James Richards IV)
San Francisco-based garage rock heavyweights Thee Oh Sees, who welcomed their great new record Floating Coffin earlier this year, have announced that they'll be embarking on a fall North American tour in October. All known Thee Oh Sees dates and song streams from each act are below...
Circuit des Yeux (aka Chicago's Haley Fohr) is set to release her fifth album, Overdue, on October 1. With the assistance of CAVE's Cooper Crain, Fohr built the temporary U.S.A. Studios in Little Village this winter for two-months of tracking. Despite the less-than-ideal locale with elevated trains roaring just a few dozen feet away, the pair set up shop to the best of their abilities and have laid down Fohr's most accessible material yet. That is not to say she's lost her experimental touch though, this set of tunes is just a bit more polished. The LP's lead single is "Lithonia," a song that originally appeared on January's CDY3 10", and they've reworked it for the forthcoming effort. The number received a soaring string arrangement in lieu of the original's lightly-strummed guitar. Fohr wails over the cinematic backdrop, "Doesn't it feel grand to have a second chance," almost like she might be celebrating having one. You can take a listen to "Lithonia" at the bottom of this post. Preorder a copy of Overdue via CDY's website.
Circuit des Yeux will also be touring throughout the U.S. this fall. Before exiting Chicago for some dates with Spires That in the Sunset Rise, Fohr will play the Empty Bottle on August 21 with wildly overlooked British psych-folk musician Nick Garrie, OWL, Ryley Walker, and Underground Symposium (tickets). She'll also play a record release show at Constellation on September 7 with a full ensemble (tickets). After the STITSR run, CDY will play a handful of shows with the incomparable Bill Callahan. That short trek includes yet another hometown show for Fohr, at Alhambra Place on October 14 (tickets).
All known Circuit des Yeux dates and a stream of "Lithonia" are below...
Landmarks -- Cuscutta 7"
Chicago's Color Radio parted ways in the spring of 2012 and more or less morphed into a new outfit called Landmarks. With a new direction and a pair of additional members in the fold, the quintet quickly began to play local shows. They put out a couple of tunes this past winter and then headed to Logan Square's The Public House to track their debut 7" for the studio's monthly Public House Sound Recordings series in May. "Cuscutta" b/w "Overflown" came out of that session, showcasing both how spacey and how tightly-wound the group can awesomely be. The motorik "Overflown" is easily my favorite of the two, echoing Micrcocastle-period Deerhunter (see "Nothing Ever Happened"). Frontman Stephen Simko's high-register vocals sit deep in the mix, taking a backseat to the pulsating bass and meandering keys. Then, almost to remind you where they started off with "Cuscutta," the quintet bust the track wide open with a charge of overdriven guitars around 02:30 in. You can grab both sides of the 7" at the top of this post and/or take a listen below.

Corrections House -- Last City Zero
Metal supergroup Corrections House, whose members are Sanford Parker (producer/engineer, Nachtmystium/Minsk/Twilight), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Bloodiest, etc), Scott Kelly (Neurosis), and Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod), have detailed their debut effort. It's called Last City Zero and is due out on October 29 via Neurot. That's its cover art above, and they just recently shared the LP's lead single "Serve or Survive." The song opens with a bluesy guitar riff and a smattering of manipulated saxophone squeals, on top of which Williams does some speak-singing. Then suddenly, the track kicks into high-gear with a hiss of industrial beats courtesy of in-house producer Parker. You can take a listen to "Serve or Survive" via Pitchfork.
Corrections House did a bit of touring around the time their debut 7" hit stores, but they haven't played Chicago yet. That'll change when they headline the Empty Bottle on November 30. Advance tickets are on sale now.
Take a listen to both sides of Corrections House's "Hoax The System" 7" below...
