Boris in New York in 2013 (more by PSquared Photography)
Summer in Chicago can be long and exhausting. If, by August, you feel like you can't take any more suburban kids in neon crop tops crowding into your favorite parks, don't worry, there's still antidotal heavy music to be consumed in dark rooms. We already told you about the stacked June and July rosters of heaviness, so now here's the situation for the dog days of August.
On August 5, as we've mentioned, Texas hell-raisers Power Trip and Mammoth Grinder will stop in at Beat Kitchen for a strong dose of old-school thrash. Tickets for that monster are still on sale here.
Next on the docket is a killer show at Bottom Lounge on August 10. Japanese noise-doom chameleons Boris are on tour and will bring their unmissable live show to bear on Chicago with support from local prog-doomers The Atlas Moth and Salt Lake City doom outfit SubRosa. This one is gonna be awesome, and tickets can be found here.
On August 15 at Township, Vienna hardcore punk act Ruidosa Inmunduncia will play a set with Impalers, an Austin band with members of Hatred Surge and Mammoth Grinder, locals Pillage who share members with Los Crudos, Sick/Tired and MK-Ultra, and punk-pop Chicagoites Canadian Rifle (tickets).
The following night, on August 16, Louisville stalwart punks Coliseum, recently signed to Deathwish, will play at Beat Kitchen with support from Meat Wave and Chord. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Closing off August on a ridiculously high note, and as we've already noted, stoner giants Sleep will be playing back to back shows with Corrections House at Thalia Hall on August 28 and 29. Tickets for the first night are sold out, but you can still snag them for the 29th here.
And as a bonus, it may not be August, but close enough for jazz, Skeletonwitch, Ghoul and Black Anvil will play a stacked show at Double Door on September 5 as part of their tour (before they hit the road with Amon Amarth). Tickets for that are on sale here.
That about does it for the summer. See you at Reggies.
Sleep @ Burgerama III in March (more by Debi Del Grande)
The mighty Sleep have announced a handful of US tour dates slated for this August. That run includes a show at new Pilsen venue Thalia Hall on August 28. Tickets go on sale this Friday (6/6) at 10AM CST.
All known Sleep dates and a stream of Dopesmoker lie after the jump...
Trevor de Brauw @ Lincoln Hall in June (more by Zach Pollack)
Pelican // Chord guitarist Trevor de Brauw has told us his top 10 favorite things of 2012. As we near the end (of the year, NOT the world), Trevor delivers a list that includes albums, songs, live shows, and major life experiences. Check out his favorite things of 2012 after the jump, but first, a message from the man himself...
There was a fucking ton of good music this year and anyone who claims the contrary needs to stop being a cynic and get on the party train. I feel like almost every one of my favorite bands/musicians made new albums this year, many of which were career highlights. Additionally great new bands are popping up at a rate that's difficult for semi-old-timer's like myself to fathom. For this year's top ten I reluctantly decided it was unfair to include clients from my PR career (difficult because I did press for so many great records, including, but not limited to, OM, Zammuto, OFF!, Codeine, William Basinski, Mono, Hundred Waters, EL-P, etc) - in part because they have the unfair advantage of me automatically obsessing over their albums, but also because it feels weird ranking them against one another. Fuck it, they're all great. But as for things I have less difficulty ranking, here's a small sample of my 2012 obsessions:
