Mikal Cronin @ Saki Records on 2.10.2013
Mikal Cronin

While in town to play a pair of shows at the Empty Bottle with Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin branched out on Sunday morning (2/10) for a set at Saki Records as part of the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events series Off the Record. Cronin performed selections from his forthcoming album, MCII (due out on 5/7 via Merge), with Ty Segall drummer Emily Rose. The event was centered around local label Trouble in Mind, who put out Cronin's self-titled debut in 2011, and attendees got to hear and purchase forthcoming releases by Jacco Gardner and Maston before the general public. Treats from Bang Bang! Pie Shop and drinks from 312 Urban Wheat Ale didn't hurt either.

We've got a set of photos from the 2/10 event at Saki. More of those, and a stream of Mikal Cronin's new single "Shout It Out," are below...

Ty Segall at the Empty Bottle on 2.09.2013 (Early Show)
Ty Segall

When was the last time you looked up from your cheap canned beer or pending photo upload to Instagram-- lag times are dreadful aren't they-- and noticed the entire crowd was in motion around you? Now that hesitant head nods and subconscious foot taps are the peak of what rock n' roll bands can hope for as far as audience participation, Ty Segall managed to unravel the crowd's anxieties and pretentions, and had the entire lower floor space of the Empty Bottle on Saturday night (2/9) knocking into each other with fervent youthful energy.

By the time Segall and his band moseyed on stage around 1:00AM at Saturday's late show, the second of a double-header, swaths of humid body heat had enveloped the sold-out crowd and the Bottle had positioned security personnel at either end of the stage to prevent a repeat of Ex-Cult's opening set. That set prominently featured that one wasted guy who takes too many turns crowd surfing, and in his overzealous approach, never even pulls it off well. If you're a garage fan that's not yet familiar with Memphis' Ex-Cult, get real and spin their self-titled: a nervy, jittery, dissonant punk record produced by Segall himself.

From the first distorted crunches of "Thank God For Sinners," a predictable yet absolutely appropriate and awesome opener, Segall and his band pounded through most of 2012's Twins and selections from Slaughterhouse without pause for tuning or banter. Ty seemed to prefer playing as many tunes as possible to extended soloing, but of course when the time was right he machine-gunned noisy shreds from his trademark surf green '66 Fender Mustang. Despite huge volumes of sound daunting for any audio engineer, Segall's live vocals were fairly consistent with his recordings-- albeit more screaming-- and the backup harmonies somehow pierced right through the haze.

Ty and co. closed their set by maxing out the jerky rhythm of "Love Fuzz" into amplified oblivion, with all guitars pressed against cabs for optimum feedback. They encored with an impromptu take on "American Woman," which certainly matched, if not exceeded, the quality of Lenny Kravitz's cover and a slightly more rehearsed version of Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love," a song I enjoyed for the very first time Saturday. The whole shebang was a sweaty mess, and that's a good thing.

A set of pictures from Ty's 2/9 early show at the Bottle are in this post. More below...

As mentioned, Ty Segall's new album (and third this year), Twins, hits stores today (10/9) via Drag City. Unlike Green Day, who are already off to a bad three-album-series start with ¡Uno!, each one of Ty's releases this year have been better than the next. Twins being no exception to that rule. Ty has also announced plans for a 2013 tour in support of Twins, which sees him heading back to Chicago on February 9 to headline the Empty Bottle. Advance tickets for that show are on sale now.

All Ty Segall tour dates are listed below...

What does your alarm clock sound like? It's either some god-awful beeping/bells/etc. or perhaps a favorite song. Some arose this morning, flipped on WGN to watch the morning news, and saw Ty Segall screaming his face off at 8AM. If you missed it on the boob tube, watch Ty and co. play a two-minute jam from their forthcoming album, Twins (out 10/9 via Drag City), below.

It's really too bad that he didn't read us the forecast like Jeff Tweedy.

Golden state garage rockers Ty Segall and White Fence (aka Tim Presley) have announced that they'll be releasing a collaborative LP, titled Hair, this April via Drag City Records. As SPIN reports, Ty handled skin bashing duties as well as rhythm guitar, while Tim recorded bass and lead guitar. Keep an eye out for a full North American tour in support of the album. Currently there are two late-May dates that jive with this, one of which is a performance at Chicago's Lincoln Hall on the 10th of the month. And just to make the show damn near irresistible, the Strange Boys will play an opening set. Tickets go on sale TODAY (2/3), at noon CST.

White Fence will also be releasing his own record this year, a double album titled Family Perfume, on April 3rd via Woodist. Ty is currently at work on a follow-up to 2011's excellent Goodbye Bread, tentatively set for a September release via Drag City Records. The two will play a few shows together in early March, before Tim joins up with Thee Oh Sees in route to SXSW.
