Chinese alt-folk band Shanren is here, touring East Coast

To quote their bio, “Shanren mine the rich musical traditions of southwestern China and fuse folk melodies with more modern influences like rock, reggae, and ska–think of it as Manu Chao with Chinese characteristics.” Not the kind of music you expect to find at Lower East Side clubs like Pianos and Fontana’s but that’s exactly two of the places the Beijing-based indie-folk band are playing this week. Their partially-fan-funded US tour begins at Pianos TONIGHT (3/6) before moving on to Fontana’s, Staten Island, PA, CT, MA, Pittsfield, Brooklyn, VA and Asbury Park.
