Club 57 exhibit coming to MoMA in 2017 (Ann Magnuson previewing it this month with audio-visual performance)

Ann Magnuson, actress, ’80s NYC Downton Scene regular, Bongwater frontwoman and generally cool person, is presenting a performance at MoMA on October 17. Titled “Dream Sequencing,” it will be “an evening of song, video, and film clips celebrating the life of the subconscious.” It’s centered on some of her rarely seen performance videos, and occasional Bongwater compatriot and downtown icon Joey Arias will join her onstage along with a few special guests. Tickets for that are on sale now.

‘Dream Sequencing’ serves as a preview for MoMA’s fall 2017 exhibition about Manhattan’s famed Club 57 of which Magnuson was a regular. While you wait for that, you can check out Tim Lawrence’s new book Life and Death on the Dance Floor, which covers the post-disco dance music scene in New York City of the early ’80s.

Joey Arias, also a onetime Club 57 regular (who has performed with Klaus Nomi, David Bowie and others), is in the midst of a three-show residency at Joe’s Pub titled “Joey Arias is With You Now.” The first happened this past Sunday (10/2), and the next two happen October 9 and 16. Joey’s band includes music director/upright bassist Ben Allison and guitarist Brandon Seabrook, and Magnuson will also join him at the 10/16 show. Tickets for both are on sale.
