CMJ 2010 - Bill's Thursday NIGHTTIME picks (BV official showcase, M For Montreal, Hype Machine & more)

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart @ the Bell House, 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
Pains

Let’s just get the shameless plugging out of the way, shall we.  Tonight’s the official BrooklynVegan showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg. I’m especially excited to see The Blow, who I haven’t caught since CMJ 2006! And Screaming Females who are genuinely mindblowing live. And Montreal band Suuns who replaced Yuck, and who are going to have a good upcoming year I think. And of course, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart who just put the wraps on their second album, and hopefully we’ll get to hear a few of those. And be sure to get there early for Young Man and free Earpeace earplugs to the first 50 people in the door.

As soon as TPoBPAH finish, I’m hopping in a cab to the M for Montreal showcase at Arlene’s Grocery to catch Radio Radio‘s 1AM set. Not only are they French-Canadian rap, they do it in the Chiac dialect that almost no one understands! They are seriously fun live. It’s the only CMJ week show not only for Radio Radio, but also Random Recipe, Uncle Bad Touch, and Red Mass. Also playing: PS I Love You, Braids, and The Pack A.D. Read more about it here. Party starts at 6pm with Braids and free poutine. If the BV show was not at the same time, I’d be here all night.

After Radio Radio, I might swing over to the Hype Machine party which is happening at Backstage, the space formerly known as The Annex. They have two stages there now, I’m told, which explains how there are nearly 30 bands and DJs performing, including A Classic Education, Crayon Fields, Kisses, The Knocks, French Horn Rebellion and more. Having suffered at the cramped Annex many nights, I’m wondering where they fit a second stage. I guess I’ll find out. This unofficial show isfree with RSVP. 7PM – 4AM.

Over at The Delancey is the Saddle Creek/Wichita showcase which is free even without a CMJ badge. This is also a pretty killer lineup of bands, including Sky Larkin (8PM), First Aid Kit (10:15PM), The Mynabirds (11PM), Frankie & the Heartstrings (11:45PM) and more. Whole lineup is here.

Elsewhere, there’s the Mexican Summer showcase at Knitting Factory with No Joy (8:30), Tamaryn (10:45PM), Lower Dens (11:45PM), and more.

And the Impose nighttime party at Don Pedros is currated by Hozac Records, with Woven Bones, the awesome Reading Rainbow, Total Slacker, Xray Eyeballsand more. Bands start at  8:30. FREE.

There’s also the Pitchfork and Neon Gold parties in Williamsburg that started early and are going late, and other DAYTIME stuff too.

These are just the shows I recommend. There’s lots more going on, obviously. That includes…
