Lady Gaga

Coachella 2017 guide for movie & TV fans (from Stranger Things to.... Twin Peaks)

More than any other music festival, Coachella is known as a place to spot TV and movie stars. This year will probably be no different, but we couldn’t help but notice all the TV and movie related things also happening on stage.

From the headliners to the countless bands who have supplied songs to notable soundtracks (we won’t list them all), there’s no shortage of nearby Hollywood in the Coachella Valley this year. Here are a few notable examples:

Lady Gaga

Not only is Beyonce’s replacement Lady Gaga one of the stars of the recent season of American Horror Story, she’ll actually be reportedly filming a remake of “A Star is Born” with Bradley Cooper in between the two Coachella weekends.

Swet Shop Boys

As we wrote in our hip hop Coachella guide, “Swet Shop Boys were formed a few years back by former Das Racist member Heems and the then-less-popular Riz MC”. Riz MC is also known as Riz Ahmed who you may know from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Night Of, The OA, and the final season of Girls.

Banks & Steelz

The very diverse RZA of the Wu Tang Clan is “Steelz” in this duo that also features Paul Banks from Interpol. On the screen he has played Shotgun Steve, Cassius Green, Samurai Apocalypse, Lamar in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, and many more.

Hans Zimmer

There are a number of significant soundtrackers this years, none more than Hans Zimmer who has scored such films as The Dark Knight, Inception, Gladiator, The Thin Red Line, The Lion King, and tons more. He performs on the Sundays of this year’s fest and is promising “guests from the rock and pop world” (maybe Johnny Marr will show up for his Inception parts?).

S U R V I V E

Austin synth quartet leapt from obscurity to worldwide notoriety thanks to their eerie score to Netflix hit Stranger Things. They packed the house at one of our SXSW 2016 shows, and they play the two Saturdays of Coachella.

Look out for Finn in the audience, and check out some photos from a recent NYC appearance by S U R V I V E, in the gallery above.

DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow’s decidedly cinematic style of turntablism sountracked cult documentary Dark Days. He plays the Fridays of Coachella this year.

Radiohead

We aren’t going to mention every time a band’s songs has appeared in a notable TV show, but every time Friday headliner Radiohead does something, it feels major. Recent examples of Radiohead songs on TV include the debut season of FX’s great Legion and season 1 of Westworld. More importantly, guitarist Jonny Greenwood has scored many Paul Thomas Anderson’s films.

Warpaint

LA band Warpaint are multi-talented and connected, and those connections include Warpaint member Jenny Lee Lindberg’s older sister Shannyn Sossamon. Warpaint member Thersa Wayman also has a film career of her own, though according to IMDB that has been on hold for a while.

Future Islands

Ok, this might be a stretch, but how many people first learned about Future Islands thanks to their viral appearance on a certain TV show?

Twin Peaks

Confusing, right? Even more so in 2017 thanks to the TV show that is returning via Showtime in May. Twin Peaks, the Chicago rock band who actually have nothing to do with the TV show, play Coachella on the Sundays.
