The Decemberists‘ Colin Meloy played Town Hall in NYC Thursday night, January 26, 2006.

I almost made the mistake of not attending this show. The size of the venue (that Bob Dylan played in) didn’t take away from the experience at all. It added to it. Colin sounded great playing a mix of ‘old‘ & new Decemberists, Shirley Collins, Morrissey, Tarkio, and some completely new stuff. One new song is about the child he’s expecting in one month. John Wesley Harding joined him on stage for two songs. Lou Reed and Sufjan Stevens (and possibly Bowie) joined us in the audience.

The funniest moment had to be when he’d just finished a ‘monologue’ which came after a Decemberists song (Shiny I think). He had played at least a few Decemberists songs before that too, but probably nothing off Picaresque. A girl yelled out from the balcony, “Can you play some Decemberists?!….Barrow Boy?” He seemed to miss the first part of her question (which was, pretentiously speaking, actually the funniest part of this), scolded her for interrupting his monologue, and said he’d consider playing “Barrow Boy” later – just one of many moments of the night that had most of the crowd laughing out loud. (note: he never played it)

Laura Veirs was great too, but I’ll talk about that later.
