COCOB HAWAII

Collections of Colonies of Bees releasing LP on Polyvinyl, touring w/ Sylvan Esso

Collections of Colonies of Bees 2018

Milwaukee post/math rock vets Collections of Colonies of Bees have been going strong for two decades now, and they’re set to follow 2014’s Set with a new album, HAWAII, on July 13 via Polyvinyl, their first album for the label since 2004’s Customer. For this album, the usually-instrumental band welcomed singer/songwriter Marielle Allschwang into their revolving lineup. Marielle is also in the bands Altos (whose lineup includes Collections of Colonies of Bees’ Daniel Spack) and Hello Death, and her 2015 solo album Dead Not Done featured Daniel Spack on multiple instruments. The first taste of their new vocal-led sound is “Ruins,” which sees Daniel and Marielle harmonizing and sounding absolutely wonderful together. This is some of the most accessible COCOB music yet, but they still find time to work in the complex eccentricities they’ve always been known for. Listen below (via Stereogum).

COCOB are also touring as an opening act for Sylvan Esso, whose Nick Sanborn was once a member of COCOB, and who opened on tour for Volcano Choir (the collaboration between COCOB and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon) back before they took off. The two acts share bills in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago. All dates are listed below.
