Comedy Roundup (4/30): John Mulaney, Hasan Minhaj, Carol Burnett, and more

So much comedy happens in NYC it’s hard to keep up. Here’s this week’s roundup of comedy stuff going on in the city. Be sure to check out last week’s roundup for more, and you can check out our comedy tag for still more.

New York’s very own Michelle Wolf made headlines this weekend with her fantastically provocative jokes as the host of the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. For the uninitiated, her jokes about Sarah Huckabee Sanders and KellyAnne Conway (“What’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women? Oh, I know. Aunt Coulter”) are tame compared to her bits on Late Night With Seth Meyers or her breakout HBO special. Watch the Correspondent’s Dinner monologue here.

More ICYMI: Reggie Watts released a new single with techno/house producer John Tejada ahead of their debut album Casual High Technology, out May 11. Last Friday also saw the premiere of Watt’s new Comedy Central gameshow, Taskmaster.

On the premiere docket this week, John Mulaney‘s new special Kid Gorgeous hits Netflix on May 1. On May 2, Comedy Knockout returns to truTV for its third season, in which Damien Lemon (Guy Code) pits comedians against each other to roast their way to the top. And on May 4, comedy icon Carol Burnett premieres her new Netflix show, A Little Help with Carol Burnett and you can watch the trailer for that here:

And in other comedy news, Mike Birbiglia is bringing his show “The New One” to Off Broadway this summer at the Cherry Lane Theatre from July 26 to August 25 which is sold out but you can also catch him at the Comedy Cellar this Wednesday, May 2 (make a reservation here). Read on to discover more of our top picks for NYC comedy shows throughout the week.

THURSDAY, MAY 3

Seth Meyers Writers: Crate Night w/ Set Fires @ UCB Hell’s Kitchen
Watch the very funny writing staff of Late Night With Seth Meyers improvise at this monthly show. These writers were improv vets long before they had their current day gigs, so it’s probably going to be a great show. Featuring Seth Reiss (former head writer of The Onion), Sal Gentile (UCB’s Apollo), Mike Scollins (SNL), Amber Ruffin (Drunk History), and Ben Warheit. (tickets)

Two Minutes To Late Night @ Saint Vitus
This late night talk show blends comedy and heavy metal for an incredible night of fast guitars, face paint, and headbanging. Each show has a different celebrity guest from the world of metal – this Thursday, it’s Myke Terry of Volumes. Check out previous shows on YouTube, and grab tickets here.

FRIDAY, MAY 4

Weeding Out the Stoned @ WMFU’s Monty Hall

The Hard Times, the satirical music news site focused on the trials and tribulations of former punks and aging music fans (“Toddler Sick Of Accidentally Stepping On Dad’s Scattered Effects Pedals” reads one recent headline), hosts this night featuring writers and friends of the site at their regular showcase, including Mary Houlihan (IFC / MTV), Branson Reese (internet cartoonist), Emily Panic (Pitchfork), and Kevin O’Brien (Arguments & Grievances). (tickets)

SATURDAY, MAY 5

Waterballoons vs. Super Soakers @ The Brick
The only info available about this show is that it is “a comedy show that has nothing to do with waterballons or supersoakers.” But considering it’s a part of the wonderfully eccentric Brooklyn Comedy Collective and starring the inimitable Conner O’Malley (Late Night With Seth Meyers) and Carmen Christopher (The Chris Gethard Show), it’s bound to be a memorable night of weirdness. (tickets)

The Ranger Zone @ Branded Saloon
For the cost of two drinks, you can catch Clare O’Kane and Sonia Denis (High Maintenance), along with TBA poets and other comics. (details)

SUNDAY, MAY 6

Catch a great lineup of club comics in this intimate club without the two-drink minimum. (tickets) Earlier in the night at the same venue, Derek Gaines and Tim Dillon jump on the lineup as well. (tickets)
