Comedy Roundup (5/7): Nick Thune, Michael Ian Black, Mo Welch, Hari Kondabolu, more

So much comedy happens in NYC it’s hard to keep up. Here’s this week’s roundup of comedy stuff going on in the city. Be sure to check out last week’s roundup for more, and you can check out our comedy tag for still more.

Nick Thune is known for his musical comedy, witty one-liners, and absurdist humor. He’ll be on a short Southeast tour with Michael Ian Black (Wet Hot American Summer), including stops in Athens, GA, North Carolina cities Charlotte, Durham and Asheville, and Nashville, TN. All dates and tickets here. Both Thune and Black are on this week’s edition of Scott Aukerman’s Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast. You’ve got a couple chances to see Nick in NYC this week, though: Union Hall tonight (5/7) with Andre Hyland (The Lonely Island’s Popstar) and Crashing’s Addie Weyrich (tickets); and then he’ll appear at Seth Herzog’s long-running weekly showcase Sweet with SNL writer Nimesh Patel, as well as UK sketch duo “The Pin” (tickets).

Hari Kondabolu‘s Netflix special, Warn Your Relatives, is out on Tuesday, May 8 and you can watch the trailer for that below. You can see him live in NYC on Sunday (5/13) at Littlefield for a taping of his and brother Ashok (Dapwell of Das Racist) Earwolf podcast, Kondabolu Brothers, where they talk about life, and family stories. Speaking of Netflix specials, Martin Short & Steve Martin‘s “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” tour hit NYC over the weekend and continues on through the summer. For those who can’t make it to one of the live shows, they’ve taped it for a Netflix special which will debut on May 25 featuring “”musical sketches and conversations about their legendary lives in show business and stand-up.”  The were just on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and you can watch their segment here:

Speaking of Martin Short, he appeared in the cold-open of this past weekend’s memorable SNL which was hosted by Donald Glover hosted a memorable Saturday Night Live, included a Migos (and Oran Juice Jones) parody, two brand-new Childish Gambino tracks, and more.

Perhaps Martin Short will also return for Arrested Development‘s fifth season as onetime fitness guru Uncle Jack. The new season premieres May 29. Watch the trailer here.

Before the fifth season premieres, though, New York-area fans can catch Tobias Funke in the flesh at David Cross“Shooting The Shit” shows in NYC ahead of his “Oh Come On” tour…including Tuesday (5/8) at LIttlefield (tickets). David will also appear on at the May 22 edition of “Running Late With Scot Rogowsky” at Gramercy Theatre which will also feature Neko Case and Paul Rudd (tickets on sale today at 5 PM).

Stand Up Comedy From Parents Who Want to Lie Down @ The Bell House
This punny title doesn’t lie: The Bell House is hosting a night of stand up from some very hilarious moms and dads, including Eugene Mirman, Roy Wood Jr. (This Is Not Happening), Ophira Eisenberg (Ask Me Another), Iris Bahr (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and Janelle James (Night Train). (tickets)

 

Side Ponytail Comedy @ Friends & Lovers
This free comedy show consistently features great comedians coming out of UCB, The Chris Gethard Show, and more, and this Monday’s lineup is no exception. This week’s installment of Butterboy, hosted by Aparna Nancherla, Maeve Higgins, and Jo Firestone, features Joel Kim Booster, who has absolutely blown up in the past year thanks to his hilarious personal anecdotes, Nico Santos (Superstore), Eliza Skinner (Adam Ruins Everything), Jess Salomon, and Mike Lawrence (Inside Amy Schumer).

Nat Townsen’s Downtown Variety Hour @ UCBeast
Nat Townsen (Vice) hosts this variety hour including “downtown history,” neighborhood trivia, and comedy. This month’s installation includes Janeane Garofalo, Sasheer Zamata (SNL, This American Life), Downtown History w/ Jimmy Webb (Trash and Vaudeville), and NYC Trivia w/ Jamela Zarha Williams. Dirty Laundry @ UCB Hell’s Kitchen
The lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but the weekly standup show for UCB (a replacement to their weekly Whiplash) has had great lineups so far, including Roy Wood Jr., Kate Willett, Anna Drezen, and more. (tickets)

This monthly standup show features some great comics from New York’s underground. Mo Welch is undoubtedly one of the coolest, wryest comics in LA, and this Thursday, she’ll grace the stage of Union Hall with her personal anecdotes and knowledge of the WNBA. She’s also bringing along with her some pretty amazing openers – Aparna Nancherla and Liza Treyger. (tickets)

 5th Annual Grist Comedy Extravaganza @ The Bell House
Eugene MirmanOphira Eisenberg, Michelle Buteau (Key & Peele), Todd Barry, Janeane Garofalo, Sasheer Zamata, and more come together to do stand up to raise money for Grist, the humorous non-profit climate-change publication that’s been chugging along since 1999. (tickets)

Ladies Who Ranch @ The Brick
The Ladies Who Ranch are a formidable all-female comedy group, feautirng new material each show from Kelly Cooper (Ground Floor), Caitlin Dullea (Ground Floor), Rachel Kaly (Montreal Sketchfest), Maya Sharma (Annoyance) , Caroline Yost (Annoyance) and Sophie Zucker (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel)For their their residency at The Brick, they have also invited a rotating drop-in to perform new material, and this week it’s none other than the fantastic Robbie Hoffman, who has stood out as one of the most original voices from The Chris Gethard Show thanks to her dry observational humor. Sasheer Zamata (SNL) hosts this monthly showcase with her friend and house DJ Donwill, in a show that ends up feeling as much like a house party as a comedy show thanks to music and audience participation. This month’s lineup features Nico Santos (Superstore), Eliza Skinner (@midnight), Solomon Georgio (Comedy Central), and musician Madison McFerrin. (tickets)
