Courtney Barnett at Taste of Chicago

Projecting an oversized confidence kept in check by a happy-go-lucky modesty and radiant smile, Barnett came across as a friendly regular who holds court in a neighborhood pub — or, given she used to work the job in Melbourne, the bartender who pours the drinks. The 31-year-old’s conversational singing employed a mix of nonchalant charm, playful menace and loose improvisation. With lyrics tumbling from her mouth at varying clips, Barnett stretched syllables, alternated rhythms and inserted words in places normally occupied by pauses. The approach commanded full attention — and fostered the sense that the unexpected might happen at any moment. – [Chicago Tribune]

Courtney Barnett wrapped up her current North American tour — which included dates with The National — at the 2019 edition of the annual food and music festival Taste of Chicago. Opening with her breakthrough hit “Avant Gardener,” her set pulled nicely from her whole discography, closing with “Pedestrian at Best.” Sunflower Bean were also on the bill and you can check out pictures from the show in the gallery above and Courtney’s setlist is below.

If the festival actually happens, and that’s a big IF, Courtney will be back in the U.S. for Woodstock 50 in August, and then in 2020 she’ll open for Brandi Carlile at two shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in January and will play Wilco’s destination festival in Mexico. All dates are listed below.
