Coven played a Satanic comeback show at LPR Halloween weekend (pics)

Jinx Dawson slowly emerged from a coffin on stage at Le Poisson Rouge on Saturday (10/27) for Coven‘s first NYC show since returning last year for their first US shows in 27 years. They blazed on with all their old classics and Jinx (the only original member) sounded good and her current lead guitarist was solid and very animated. At one point someone dressed as Jesus showed up bearing his cross and dragging it on stage and proceeded to hang himself on it. Dawson poked at him with a whip and eventually Jesus collapsed from the cross after inverting the cross to the Satan position. A little on the nose maybe, but perfectly in line with the occult rock legends’ M.O. and the Halloween season.

Opening were well-matched Brooklyn locals Sanhedrin, who played a set of old school-style hard rock with some Sabbath worship sprinkled in. Their seven-song set included three new songs to be released on their new album due this February. Erica Stoltz is a great frontperson and she has a great voice that occasionally brought Joan Jett to mind, and Jeremy Sosville (also of Black Anvil) is a solid guitarist who played fantastic solos, especially on the title track from their debut album Funeral For The World which ended their set.

Pictures of both bands are in the gallery above.
