Creation Records biopic coming from ‘Trainspotting’ team

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle are reteaming for a new film about storied UK independent label Creation Records and its founder, Alan McGee. It’s a rise-and-fall story that’s definitely in their wheelhouse, full of rock n’ roll, drugs, reckless spending, more drugs, and impenetrable Scottish accents. And, of course, great bands and music as the label was home to Oasis, The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Ride, House of Love, Felt, and more. Long in the works, the film will be based on McGee’s memoir, The Creation Records Story: Riots, Raves and Running a Label, and will be written by Welsh, executive produced by Boyle, and directed by Nick Moran who also made Telstar: The Story of Joe Meek. Ewan Bremner, who played Spud in Trainspotting will star as McGee and the cast also includes Rupert Everett, Suki Waterhouse and Jason Flemyng. The movie is titled Creation Stories and here’s the IMDB synopsis:

Creation Stories tells the unforgettable tale of infamous Creation Records label head Alan McGee; and of how one written-off young Glaswegian upstart rose to irrevocably change the face of British culture.

“I’ve been lucky to work with both Danny and Nick over the years and to have the two of them together on this project, along with Ewen, feels like a lottery win,” Welsh, who is friends with McGee, told Deadline. It starts shooting in May and, if nothing else, should have a good soundtrack.

If you can’t wait for the biopic, there is documentary Upside Down: The Creation Records Story which you can stream on Amazon Prime, and David Cavanaugh’s amazing 2001 book The Creation Records Story: My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry for the Prize (which is out of print but worth picking up if you can find it for a reasonable price).
