Cross Record shares “The Fly” from new LP, touring

cross-record

Cross Record was originally a duo, with Emily Cross primarily writing the the songs while her husband Dan Duszynski handled instrumentation, arrangement and production. (They were both also in Loma with Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg.) They split up, and now Cross Record is just Emily; she’ll release her new self-titled album on August 2 via Ba Da Bing. The latest single is “The Fly,” a delicate pop song spun out with shimmering electronics. “I was thinking about the fragility of the mind under pressure, being on a brink of collapse and being aware of that, and finding the humor in it objectively,” says Cross. “The fly in old oil paintings is a signifier of death and impermanence. The viewer sees all of the perfectly ripe fruits, flowering buds at the height of their glory–but it does all end some day. I suppose it’s a song about brinks or being close to an edge: the edge of a meltdown, the edge between life and death, the moment you think you see something beautiful but it turns out to be a plastic bag, and that’s funny sometimes.”

Emily will take Cross Record on tour in September, with dates starting 9/4 in Marfa, TX and wrapping up 9/29 in Atlanta, hitting Phoenix, L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Brooklyn (9/24 @ Trans-Pecos), and more on the way. She’ll also be performing “Living Funerals” in most cities on the tour which is described as a “3-hour long experience which focuses on turning towards one’s own mortality. Participants are faced with their own memorial, are told to write their last words, and then are lead through a death visualization. It is a truly transformative journey, bringing a new outlook on life as a whole.”

Cross Record are also playing the 2019 edition of the Likeminds art/tech conference/festival which happens September 20-22 in Fishkill, NY. Lineup TBA but tickets are on sale. All dates are listed below.
