Daniel Johnston‘s “final tour” (as they’re calling it) hit NYC on Saturday (10/7) for a show at Town Hall. At each show, he’s being backed by different notable local musicians who also choose the setlist, and at Town Hall he was joined by Joan Wasser (Joan as Police Woman), Jared Samuel (Invisible Familiars), Paul Collins (Beirut) and more.

While the tour got off to a bit of a rocky start, things went much more smoothly at Town Hall. Like at all of these shows, the evening began with a screening of acclaimed 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston and when that ended, the band came right out. Daniel’s brother, Dick, set up the music stand and then Daniel came out to a very warm welcome from the crowd. The band was super tight and did an amazing job of keeping up with Daniel’s singing pace, and the audience — which included Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes — was treated to 45-minute set of a dozen or so songs, including some of his most famous (“Speeding Motorcyle,” “Like a Monkey in a Zoo”), and some rarities as well.

Daniel didn’t talk to the crowd that much, apart from thanking them a few times, though at the end of the night he introduced the final song by saying, “I have special Christmas wish for you all…true love will find you in the end.”

Pictures from the night are in the gallery above, and fan-shot video of the whole show is below.
