Daniel Johnston at SXSW 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)

Cult artist Daniel Johnston has influenced tons of people over the years (like Kurt Cobain) and he has now announced what he says will be his final shows. Each show will have him backed by artists he influenced, specific to the city.

Daniel is playing New Orleans with The Preservation All-Stars, Philly with The Districts and Modern Baseball, Chicago with Jeff Tweedy & friends, and Portland and Vancouver with Built to Spill & others. The backing band will create the setlist each night, and each show will begin with a screening of the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

Built to Spill previously played with Daniel Johnston at a BrooklynVegan SXSW party in 2012.

If all Modern Baseball members play the Philly show, this will be their first show since going on hiatus.

Daniel was supposed to play the 2017 Asbury Park Film Festival in April, but his show got canceled. All Daniel Johnston dates are listed, with a 2012 NPR Tiny Desk Concert, below.
