Darkest Hour share new song; NYC show now with Withered and Immortal Bird

Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour used to be known as a mall-metal band who trafficked in poppy melo-death, albeit doing so better than many of the At the Gates imitators that were prevalent in the early 2000s. But now they seem to be pivoting in another direction–they’ve signed to cool metal label Southern Lord for their new LP Godless Prophets and the Migrant Flora, they got Converge’s Kurt Ballou to produce it, and they’re touring with a bunch of cool bands like Ringworm, Rotten Sound and Tombs.

Now they’ve shared a single from their new album, and musically this whole thing is starting to make even more sense. Far from most of their earlier stuff, the new song “Knife in the Safe Room” is a raging slice of raw metalcore, much in the vein of someone like Nails, Full of Hell, or even Ringworm. It has a catchy thrash solo right in the middle, and generally sounds like an angrier, realer version of this band. Definitely a pleasant surprise, and something that has me very interested to hear this album.

The tour hits NYC for a show at Saint Vitus on February 21, and excitingly, it appears to have been merged with the Withered/Immortal Bird show that had been set to go down on the same day. So that’s now a seriously stacked bill with those three bands, plus Rotten Sound and Ringworm. Tickets are still available.

Listen to “Knife in the Safe Room” and check out all tour dates below.
