Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Dave Hill has a new book coming out, touring & other news

Comedian, fashionista, guitarsonist, lifelong friend of BrooklynVegan, and one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet in real life, Dave Hill is one of the most interesting and prolific characters woven into the tapestry of the NYC comedy and variety scene. As proven with his brilliant 2012 book Tasteful Nudes, “prodigal writer” is yet another accolade one could readily throw at the man. I am happy to report that he is set to release a follow up to Tasteful Nudes, titled Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, out May 10 via Blue Rider Press. This new collection of personal non-fiction essays are based on Dave’s life after his mother’s death as he attempts to spend more quality time with his father. Topics include going to prison in Mexico, life on streets of Cleveland, OH (his hometown), kung fu fighting in NYC, male bonding in a big rig, an unexpected “message in a bottle” on a subway platform, working with Donald Trump, and so much more.

In my book, which, as mentioned previously, is called Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, I talk about hanging out with my dad, the time I went to prison in Mexico, an aborted attempt at becoming a kung fu master, and other matters of international importance. It has already received advance praise from Dick Cavett, Malcolm Gladwell, Janeane Garofalo, and pretty much anyone else who has even looked at it for a second. In short, it pretty much has everything and I really think you are going to like it so much. Also, in an attempt to boost sales/drink for free, I am embarking on a national book tour in May and June. Please come out when I roll into your town. It would be cool if I could crash at your place, too. Yes, my publisher is springing for classy hotels (minibar inclusive), but I like you and don’t want our time together to end.

Dave’s coast-to-coast book tour includes five dates in NYC; May 10 at BookCourt in Brooklyn with Malcolm Gladwell, May 11 at McNally-Jackson Books with Adam Resnick, May 12 at the Washington Heights Y with Mike Sacks, May 15 at QED in Astoria, and May 18 at the Bryant Park Reading Room. Check the end of this post for a full list of book tour dates.

Besides this awesome book and book tour there’s a ton of other stuff going on with our man Dave. First off, back in 2013 I rattled off the following tweet:

For the uninitiated, Rich Fulcher is an American comedian living in the UK known for his roles as Bob Fossil in The Mighty Boosh, Rich in the grossly underrated series Snuff Box, various characters in Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy, and so many other great things it’s crazy. He is in my top 5 favorite comedic figures of all time list. So is Dave Hill. Personality-wise, they always seemed like they’d make a great match, thus my tweet. As it turns out, my tweet was prophecy; Rich Fulcher and Dave Hill are about to shoot a Steve Carell produced show for Universal any second now. More on that as it develops, but holy crap that’s a dream team. Still waiting for the Roger Waters prophecy to happen. In the meantime you can also see Dave on TV basically all the time. He’s been a go to guy on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, he just taped an episode of The Jim Gaffigan Show and he’ll will be doing @midnight (again) on June 20.

On the music front, Dave and his hot rock band Valley Lodge (whose song “Go” is the theme to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) have been in the studio working on a new album. He’s also about to embark on a new metal project with drummer Chris Reifert (Death, Autopsy) called Painted Doll.

In addition to the inevitable, drop-in sets he’s bound to do at venues throughout NYC, Dave has a few big ticket shows coming up. He’ll be doing stand up at Sasquatch! festival. He’ll be with Loudon Wainwright at City Winery on June 22 (tickets) and with Rhett Miller at City Winery on July 10 (tickets). In August he’ll be doing comedy at the Camden Fringe Festival in London. Then he’ll be touring Switzerland (and probably some other European countries) in the fall doing stand up.

And don’t forget to catch The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU, Mondays from 9pm – midnight.
