Dean Wareham & Cheval Sombre share “If I Could Only Fly” from collab LP

Dean Wareham has collaborated with Cheval Sombre (aka Chris Porpora) on a new album of what they’re calling “western dreampop” covers of classic cowboys songs, as well as tracks by Magnetic Fields, Bob Dylan and others. The record was produced by Jason Quever (Papercuts) and Dean and Cheval are backed by a band including Britta Phillips, Anthony LaMarca (the War on Drugs) and Will Halsey (Sugarcandy Mountain). They’ve just shared “If I Could Only Fly,” which is a song by Blaze Foley. “Cheval suggested this haunting Blaze Foley song that was something of a hit for Merle Haggard,” says Wareham. “Our version is closer to post-punk Manchester than to Texas country.” You can listen to that and “Wayfaring Stranger” off the album, plus artwork and full tracklist, below.

Dean and Cheval’s self-titled album will be out October 26 and they’ll be playing some shows together: NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge on December 7 (tickets) and San Francisco’s The Chapel on January 26 (tickets).

Speaking of Blaze Foley, he is the subject of a new biopic, titled Blaze, that was directed by Ethan Hawke. It’s in theaters now and you can watch the trailer below.
