Deerhoof share “Model Behavior” from new LP, expand tour, playing NYC Roots Picnic

Deerhoof are releasing their new album The Magic on June 24 and today they shared a new single ahead of its release called “Model Behavior.” It’s a funky track written in admiration of Bernie Sanders’ resilience, with a nod to James Brown too.

Drummer Greg Saunier shared a bit about the song on Facebook, saying:

It is only rarely in Deerhoof that my bandmates allow me to tune my drums up to James Brown tightness levels because they always say it’s too loud. But occasionally I slip one by them. This song is all about improvisation vs precision, that age-old tension existing in all music except computer music and classical music auditions. It’s that feeling on the dance-floor when you can do no wrong and that feeling with bureaucracy when you can do no right. It’s a sad song about Bernie Sanders.

Listen to it below.

As mentioned, Deerhoof are touring around the release date of their LP, including two shows at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel on June 22 & 23 (tickets). They’re also playing the first-ever NYC edition of the Roots Picnic on October 2, along with Wu-Tang Clan, D’AngeloDavid Byrne, Nile Rodgers, and more. Tickets for the Roots Picnic are currently on BrooklynVegan presale and go on general sale Friday (6/10) at 10 AM.
